Colleges in the Carolinas

OP, stick with Elon. It is a great choice.

@citymama9 of course Elon has more out of state kids, it’s a private school. -_- There are still a lot of OOSers at UNCW, it’s far more diverse socioeconomically (whereas Elon is homogeneous), and the kids are very humble in comparison to the snobs that Elon tends to attract. Not only that, Wilmington is a better city than Elon by a country mile.

Elon is certainly good academically, but I find it to be overrated. We’re just a little bit better.

I believe OP should have both UNCW and Elon, as well as App State on his list. In general, you really can’t go wrong with many schools in North Carolina…unless you’re talking about High Point or UNC Pembroke.

OP, IMO , I think that the question you should be asking yourself is " Will I be happy living on this campus and in this community for at least the next 4 years?" I don’t what type of community you live in now in the Midwest , but if it is more suburban or metropolitan , moving to an area that is more rural with “boring, and not much going on " will probably be quite an adjustment . If the area is only a concern to you after you graduate, that should play less into your decisions. Many students relocate after graduation , so that shouldn’t be your deciding factor. You’ve been given some great options to consider where you will get a wonderful education in a variety of areas, some rural, some suburban and some urban. Four years can be a long time if you’re " bored and have nothing going on.” My advice is to sit down and prioritize what exactly is meaningful to you in a college experience, and begin your research there. You will receive a lot of opinions and advice on CC, but in the end the only important opinion is yours . Good luck in your college search.

UNC Wilmington has more economic diversity than Elon, and although it is a state school, there are OOS students who attend. 75% of students who attend Elon are from the northeast and many of them are very very wealthy. I would visit and see what you are comfortable with.

I second warblersrule about Ithaca I think it would be a very good fit for the OP.

@carolinamom2boys: I’m glad to hear that DS16 enjoyed her weekend as a Wofford Scholar! One of my daughter’s good friends was there also with her family, and they had a great time; I’m sure that you crossed paths with them at some point.

On another note, my cousin graduated from UNC-W in the late 90’s and loved it even back then.

Just thought I would offer that!

@SouthFloridaMom9 the great thing is that it’s skyrocketed in stature since then!! It’s growing even more in popularity and size, and I predict that we’ll have a <50% acceptance rate very soon!!

@LBad96 - this particular cousin of mine was an extra in some Dawson’s Creek episodes if I remember correctly.

So glad UNC-W is cooler than ever!
