Colleges in the Carolinas

Hi!
I have visited Elon university recently and was very pleased with the school in general. I live in the Midwest but my interests lean more
towards the Carolina/Florida region. I enjoy
kayaking, trail/mountain biking, fishing, and
camping, and sports. So, as you can see i am
the adventure/outdoor type. This is why I think the Carolinas/Florida with the beach and mountains would fit me well.
I have a 3.7 unweighted gpa and 26 act.
I am also looking to major in communications which Elon is well know for.
The only negative about Elon is the surrounding area is boring and not much going on.
Elon’s size is great for me (5,000) and I am looking for schools around that size.
Based on what I have stated do any schools come to mind that would be of interest to me?

Take a look at UNC Asheville, or even Appalachian State. Both are in fantastic areas.

Furman University in Greenville SC, College of Charleston in Charleston SC may be an option.( it’s a little larger, though) It’s an urban campus in that it’s integrated into Charleston ,SC. The beach is close by and you can be to the mountains if NC and SC in 4 hrs.

@MattSchool My advice to you is don’t worry about the surrounding area. Students that pick a school based on this will find they have very little time, money or interest in the surrounding area. A survey was done several years back at NYU where 75% of students had not been to Central Park once and an even higher amount didn’t know the location of the Empire State Building.

Your life will be campus-centric, so make that a priority.

Elon is a great school and I am sure you will find plenty to do, after you wake up at noon on the weekend, do laundry, meet classmates for Calculus or Writing Lab, start homework for the coming week and then take a 2-3 hour nap before the string of parties that night.

Most parents are surprised at how few campus activities students actually take advantage of.

If you want a LAC in a great place for people who like the outdoors, Sewanee is the place for you.

That is true TurnerT. I will be very busy in college. But, I am also thinking about location of colleges because where I go to school might be where I end up (location wise). If I go to school in the Midwest I will most likely obtain a job in the Midwest where as if I go to school in the Carolinas I will probably end up living there.

Elon is one of the best schools in the South and its national footprint expands every year. I really don’t think you should worry about being limited job-wise. Often that happens but its by choice. Elon is well known in the major Southern job markets and if you want to leave you should have no problem. If you look at the Elon website just 30% of students started careers in North Carolina and I would bet Charlotte and Raleigh and would also bet most chose this because they are from NC.

Another vote for Furman.

Greenville is a terrific city, and it is easy drive into the mountains or over to the beach in a couple hours. Plus, Furman is test-optional.

However, if you are sure you want communications, then Elon is stronger in that field.

Good luck!

Nonsense.

OP, you might also look at Wake Forest; and Guildford College (NC) and Wofford College (SC), while slightly smaller, might warrant a look.

Although not in one of the Carolinas, the University of RIchmond might satisfy your other criteria as well.

@gandalf78 I thought of Wofford too, but they don’t have a communications major.

I’m not sure about location, but these are good schools:

Reaches:
North Carolina State University

Matches:
Appalachian State University
Clemson University
Furman University
Elon University
Meredith College (Not sure if they have communications)
Salem College
UNC Wilmington
University of South Carolina

Safeties:
College of Charleston
East Carolina University
UNC Charlotte
UNC Greensboro

@newjerseygirl98 Many of the schools on your list are very different than Elon, a small, private LAC of approximately 5,000 students. For example, Clemson and University of SC have approx 20,000 students. They are public ,state run universities . College of Charleston is closer to what the OP is looking for in size , and while it is a state college, it is a LAC.

@carolinamom2boys Sorry, I didn’t notice the size they wanted, thanks for pointing that out.

If you want smaller LACS, then you should look at:
-Furman University
-Meredith College
-Salem College
-College of Charleston

No worries@newjerseygirl98. I initially had Clemson on my original list of suggestions until I reread the original post. Many of the schools are on my son’s list . He originally wanted small, but then visited Clemson, and it jumped way up his list. I think it’s good to visit many different types of schools to see what feels best. Even if you can’t visit the specific school, you can sometimes get an idea whether you like a certain type of school.

The College of Charleston describes itself as a liberal arts university; it’s a college with 10,000 undergrads, considerably larger than the undergraduate student bodies of several private universities in the Carolinas such as Wake and Duke. In the Carolinas, only UNC Asheville and USC-Aiken are members of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.

On that note, UNC Asheville, suggested by jcc in the first post, strikes me as a terrific fit. Quirky city, super easy access to nature, and a student body that’s small but not stiflingly so (3800 undergrads).

The OP is not eligible for Meredith and Salem; they’re single-sex colleges.

Ithaca in NY would be a great fit.

– 6100 undergrads
– Extremely strong communications program
– Awesome area with tons of outdoors opportunities

@carolinamom2boys: You are correct about Wofford not having a communications (or journalism) major. I was thinking more along the lines that Wofford might meet some of the other criteria of the OP. It is a good little school, however, and a person can get a very good education there.

@gandalf78 I agree Wofford is a great school . DS16 is a Wofford Scholar. We were just there last weekend. Very impressive . I also agree that while Sewanee has religious studies as a major, I don’t consider it a particularly religious school. I have a friend whose daughter goes there , and she would probably agree with you too.

Seriously, why not look at UNC Wilmington? Fantastic beach scenery and superb academics, better than Elon in all honesty.

In what ways is UNC Wilmington better than Elon? I would think Elon would be a more comfortable place for someone from out of state since they have many kids coming from far away. Where as UNC is made up of mostly instaters, and there would be lots of kids hanging with high school friends or going home on the weekends.
