Colleges in the DC Area?

I was wondering what schools in the DC area preferably I should look into and research. I want to major in Political Science and Government, possibly a double major in Business or something as well. I want to eventually get into government or law school. I’m not the most amazing student, but I’d like to say my EC list is above average if not pretty good so schools which would be a realistic goal for me would be great. Thanks!

I am currently a Junior with a 3.1 weighted college prep GPA, 2.8 unweighted college prep GPA. I’m student advisory board secretary, ASB Parliamentarian, Executive Assistant for Key Club Division which comprises of 16 schools, volunteer, State competitor in National History Day, and played tennis freshmen and sophomore year. I plan on running(and most likely winning) Student Advisory Board President who is also the Student Board Member for the School District, ASB President, and I am also currently the Key Club President Elect. I have about 180+ hours of community service throughout my high school career. I still haven’t taken my SATs or ACTs yet but I’m guessing I’ll score decently on them.

Take a look at American University and at Catholic University. And get that GPA up to an UW 3.0!

You will need to get your UW GPA up beyond 3.0 to have a reasonable chance at American. Less than 1% of applicants with GPAs below 3.0 were admitted and 86% of admits had GPAs above 3.5 in the most recent year. Catholic looks like a better match since 26% of their admits were below 3.0 and only 41% were over 3.5.

Cut back on those EC’s. Too many EC"s is a kiss of death. Colleges want one or two and follow through…not 10. And they will look at your EC list and your GPA and conclude you made poor choices…choosing instead to socialize and organize clubs and not do work and focus on your studies. Why does that matter? Because kids in college who do the same go on probation for low gpas and sometimes dont make it.

SO…THIS SEMESTER, NOW…RIGHT NOW…cut back on your EC involvement and hit the books and TURN IN YOUR HOMEWORK and study your behind off and get the highest GPA you can.

Finally, Catholic University is a very good school. Loyola Maryland is a good school in Baltimore. James Madison in Harrisonburg Virginia.

You will find much discussion on this website about the pros and cons of George Washington U. vs. American U. Most is on the portion of this site under alphabetical colleges for each of those colleges.

What state do you live in? Particularly if you are in-state, I would definitely look at U. Maryland College Park and George Mason. You can use the Metro to get into the center of DC from each.

@sovereigndebt I’m planning on straight A’s this semester. My college prep classes are AP Precalc, AP Eng lang/comp, Span 3, and APUSH. As for my EC, I’ve already drastically cut them down to: ASB, Student Advisory Board, Key Club, and History Day. I’ve been doing each of them for at least 3 years or more.

@ everyone Thanks for all the suggestions!
