I recently visited and really liked Bates College. However, I am from Maine and I want to get out of the state (and potentially the Northeast region).

What are some schools similar to Bates in admissions selectivity, size, and social scene that are outside of Maine?

If you go to the Colleges subforum, at the top will be a listing of top liberal arts schools for CC. I’d go through that list to see which matches Bates. I think Oberlin, Grinnell, and Carleton are similar and in the midwest.

Lewis and Clark in Portland, OR and Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. Btw, my kid went to school in Maine and I think he’s never coming back! Best wishes in your search.

Lake Forest outside of Chicago
In Ohio, check out Denison
In Pennsylvania, maybe Dickinson, Washington and Jefferson, Lafayette, Muhlenberg,Bucknell?

I think Carleton is quite a bit more selective than Bates, so probably not really a match for what the OP has asked for. Oberlin & Grinnell are also a bit more difficult than Bates to get into, but not as much as Carleton.

Bates actually had a lower admissions rate than Carleton, but only by around 4.4% (26.6% vs. 31%)

Anyways, here are some schools you might also like:
-Wesleyan
-Earlham College (much less selective than Bates)
-Davidson (extremely selective)
-St. Lawrence University (maybe, much less selective than Bates)
-Kenyon College
-Whitman College
-Beloit

Thank you for the suggestions. I am interested in Wesleyan and Carleton, but they seemed to be more selective than Bates based on SAT scores.

I got a 1950 on my SATs and have a 3.6 GPA, so based on those facts I felt that those scores were reaches for me. Great schools nonetheless, but I have enough reaches as it is. So Dickinson and Macalaster seem more reasonable.

I guess I would prefer something more East Coast or Midwest than a school like Whitman.

Thanks for the suggestions so far… Any others?

Definitely look into Beloit and maybe College of Wooster, Clarke or Allegheny. Very intellectual B students schools on the East Coast and Midwest

The other thing to check is whether your school uses parchment.com or a similar tool. Parchment uses your transcript and your test scores to give you a estimate of your chances for admittance to schools that interest you. Its been good reality therapy for my son who’s test scores far outpaced his gpa. The results don’t always match my expectations though and Carleton came in with higher odds than Oberlin, Kenyon, and Macalester so I don’t know what conclusion to draw there. He also has higher odds of getting into Bates than Colby but I can’t remember the number relative to Carleton.

If you are looking to stay in the Northeast I would recommend giving some other NESCACs a look! Middlebury is very similar to Bates, though slightly more selective. Colby offers a more “jockish” feel, but is about the same selectivity. Other similar schools include Hamilton, Colgate and Franklin & Marshall (:
