Colleges Like Syracuse University

Hello!

I am currently looking for a university like Syracuse. I love EVERYTHING about SU! The greek and party life is fantastic. I love the big name and Big school as well. I would prefer either football or hockey but im open to it. I would go to SU BUT i live 20 mins away and am looking to get out of NY and the area.

Looking for:
Big school
big sports (hockey or football)
well know
biology and law
near city

Just need help thinking of similar colleges!

Tulane, University of Miami, BU, BC may fit some of your criteria.
Wisconsin, Indiana- Bloomington, Univ Michigan and other state schools will have similar “big” sports feel although they are quite a bit bigger than SU.

i second all of those ^

At BU the only “big” sport is hockey.

BC sounds like a great fit. I don’t think BU would be as much of a fit in the social department. Michigan would be another great option listed that stands out to me. All good suggestions.

I would second Wisconsin. It has bigger football, great hockey, sometimes great basketball and is a better school than Syracuse (maybe except for Communications major).

If you are willing to go truly BIG, also consider Ohio State (in Columbus), U Minnesota (in Minneapolis), U Washington (Seattle), or U Texas (Austin). For something more akin to Syracuse (bigger private school near urban w/ sports), I echo the suggestion ms of Tulane, BC, U Miami, and also SMU (Dallas), TCU (Fort Worth/Dallas metro), Vanderbilt (Nashville), USC (Los Angeles), or Northwestern (Chicago).

I believe this poster also has some financial constraints to consider when looking at colleges.

I suggest going to ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ site. They have a feature where you can put in a college name and it will give you a list of similar colleges

I do not have any financial restraints. I may have financial issues, but no financial restraints. The only restraints are the ones you put on me. Thank you.

Financial issues mean that you need to consider finances. Either apply where you will get merit… or apply where you will get FA. Have you used the net price calculators? Can you afford your EFC? These schools will not all meet full need.

You … as an undergrad… can only take out $5500 your first year, $6500 your second year… and $7500 ( ?) your third and fourth year. You can’t take out loans higher than this… and you will need to fill out the fafsa and maybe the profile… using your parents information.

Constraints…not restraints.

Can you guys stop commenting on all of my things? Im asking for schools like SU, Not financial input. You guys are seriously making me break down over something as stupid as this because you wont leave this topic alone. This is something for my family and I to figure out, not you two. This is a private matter for you NOT to be in. I thank you for your advice and input but I will ask you to drop it.

@Taylorwicks I will say this once more but then I am done giving you advice. We are here to help you find affordable schools. Most people have financial constraints. It is time to face reality.

You indicated that your parents won’t pay and they make $130,000 a year. You reported that you will apply as an independent …to get more aid… but you do not seem to meet the requirements. You can’t apply as an independent. You can’t take out large loans as an undergrad. Will your parents cosign $200,000 in loans? Will they qualify?

You have the $5500 Stafford loan, money from your job, and any merit you receive… if you apply to schools where you qualify. You need a LOT of merit. Your EFC to schools that meet need appears to be around $20,000+. Can you pay $20,000 a year? You should retake the ACT… your score is good but not good enough for competitive schools that meet need. A school like BU will not meet need- even if you get some aid … . it will still be too expensive.

Good luck to you. If you get accepted to Wisconsin and Ohio State… I wish you luck.

Look at the merit money posts in the FA threads. I am now done.

Based on what I have read above your best bet is a SUNY. Oswego might provide what you’re looking for.

There are a ton of students every year who plan to “figure it out”. When their parents see the private loans with 10% interest rates, you’ll really be figuring it out. Please don’t be rude when people are spending their free time trying to help you.

I am back after promising not to. I suggested that the OP attend SUNY Buffalo or Binghamton because those schools have her engineering major. She can live with several roommates in inexpensive off campus housing, work as many hours as possible, and attend school part time. This will be very very difficult … but possibly doable. I believe that if she attends part time (50%?) she can still take out the Stafford loans, which will pay her tuition. She can also live at home and attend a SUNY school either full time or part time.

The OP rejected both ideas because she wants to attend a school like Michigan, UNC, Wisconsin, Boston U, etc. The student can’t take out loans by herself other than the Stafford loans. If her parents agree to cosign the loans, it is possible that they won’t qualify for all four years. They may get some FA to UNC ( getting in will be another issue), but the other schools will not give her money. And she would still need to pay her EFC at UNC.

It is possible that the OP may qualify for some merit at Ohio State ( it’s not guaranteed) but even if she gets the Buckeye Scholarship for $12,000… the school will still be in the high 20’s. And… I am not sure if her class rank and ACT are high enough (28?). She really needs full tuition and needs to look way way down the selectivity list.

Again, I wish her well.

Didn’t the OP say she had gotten accepted to Boston University? Assuming she can pay the costs to attend, I would say that BU is very similar in many ways to Syracuse. BU has hockey…and its big at BU. No football.

BU also has Boston. But the cost to attend might be an issue.

@Taylorwicks if you have a fall 2018 acceptance to BU…it must have been early decision…and you would also have your financial aid package. Are you pulling out of your ED acceptance?

Other similar schools? What about University of Delaware? Not as costly as some of the other flaships for OOS kiddos. Good engineering (but really there are a LOT of colleges with ABET accredited engineering programs).

Other thoughts…University of New Hampshire…again…not sure if cost will work out but it’s a lot less costly than BU or Syracuse.

Yes I believe the OP reported that she was accepted to BU. I think she would like it there… based on her criteria.

Geez, will some of you stop it with the pendantic chatter about finances?!? We all realize that finances are a big part of the college selection process, but when the OP expressly comes back to tell you to stop, and instead to answer her specific separate question, why do you insist on going on and on about it? Enough already. And, no, my post is NOT an excuse for you to come back and post yet AGAIN about the financial virtues of some school that is not responsive to the original question, just to somehow illuminate me about the importance of finances.
