Colleges of UMich

I do apologize if this information is readily apparent or available on the UMich website, but navigating it is confusing me.

Is anyone willing to give me a basic breakdown of which colleges are for undergrads? For example, the college of music, theatre, and dance is not listed under Undergraduate Studies but is an option as a school to apply to in the undergraduate application. And what would be the difference between Music, Theatre, and Dance, and Music, Theatre, and Dance dual applicant? It seems like you can only choose one option, even if you wanted to apply to LSA and MTD.

I found the page for Residential College and got the basic jist of it, but couldn’t find objective information, like how many people are in the school and if its acceptance rate differs from LSA. Anyone in Residential College want to speak from experience?.. and is it strange to have your dorm experience so set for your first two years?

The point is, I’d like to challenge myself academically while being able to enroll in advanced dance and music classes. Is it hard to cross-register classes between schools? I’d assume that priority would be given to the arts students rather than other students, so that might make it more practical for me to apply to both schools. Are the buildings far apart enough to be inconvenient?

slightly confused Much thanks to anyone who can alleviate this condition.

Err, I’ll try and help you as much as I can.

Residential college is a sub-unit of LSA, kind of like a special program with it’s own additional requirements (mainly increased language requirements). You’re really not set for two years, because if you don’t like it you can just drop out of residential college after a year. Come to think of it, it’s very much like Honors college.

Applying to the school of music/dance/theatre is more than just the application, there is also some kind of audition required. If you just applied to SMDT, then your application would only be considered by them along with an audition. As a dual-degree applicant, your application would be considered by both LSA and SMDT, and you would be concurrently enrolled in both programs.

I’m guessing since there is the audition process for SMDT, you’d have to apply for a dual-degree program. You’d want to talk to an advisor and get this cleared, but it might be possible for you to enroll in a dual-degree program and take classes in SMDT without any intention of fully meeting the degree requirements.

SMDT is based out of north campus (along with engineering, art and design, architecture), and the rest of your classes will be on Central Campus . In general, the classes on Central Campus and North Campus are offset by half an hour to give people time to make the busride between campuses (ie, hour long classes on central campus run on the hour, so the hour long classes on north campus run on the half hour). Pretty much every engineer has to split their time between courses on north and central campus, so it’s definitely doable.

Thanks for the help - I think UMich refers to MDT as just music sometimes, but I’ve cleared myself of a few confusions. I suppose if anything really serious happens, I can ask UMich admissions themselves. The information about the class scheduling and buses was especially helpful.
