Colleges Similar To Skidmore College

Hi,

I like the general vibe of Skidmore- it seems to be halfway between artsy and mainstream. I feel like I would fit in well there. I definitely wouldn’t feel comfortable at a school that was hyper-artsy or ‘out there’ (ie Sarah Lawrence, etc.), and I’m not really looking for a preppy LAC (Hamilton, University of Richmond, etc.) either. A friendly and involved student body is a big plus as well. Location does not matter at this point in my search. Does any one have any suggestions about schools that are similar to Skidmore in terms of student body, and seem to fit the rest of my criteria?

All feedback is appreciated! Thanks!

Look into Lewis & Clark College, a LAC on the outskirts of Portland. Lawrence University and Eckerd College may also work.

Kalamazoo College could be a possibility although I admit that I don’t know much about the school.

Whitman, University of Puget Sound, Pitzer. Agree with Lawrence and Eckerd, would also add Beloit perhaps Macalaster.

Hamilton, Wesleyan & Vassar.

Look into Dickinson College and Muhlenberg (both in PA) come to mind. And perhaps an unexpected suggestion is Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus ( about 2,000 undergrads , the theater and dance depts. are at LC in addition to traditional liberal arts and a small business school so it may have a good mix of students).

Any particular aspect of Skidmore’s artsy-ness that especially appeals to you? Are you looking for strong music? Dance? Theater? Fine arts? All of the above?

Bard, Muhlenberg, Elon

Kalamazoo has a student body that ranges from men in skirts to Vineyard Vines, with no discernible dominant type. The city of Kalamazoo has a strong arts presence.

Earlham is another one with a well-rounded student body, covering all the bases and no dominant type.

I WOULD characterize Bard as hyper-artsy. Very different feel than Skidmore. Agree with the U. of Puget Sound suggestion (my S crossed Skidmore off his list, despite really loving his visit there, because UPS had everything he liked about Skidmore, but was stronger in his particular areas of interest). Knox is another one to look at.

Second the Knox suggestion – that is a wonderfully impressive school – very welcoming, same diversity of kids (more men in skirts, ok, we only saw one . … . to button downs and khakis). My kid loved the class he sat in on, found the professor vibrant, smart, and the students engaged.

Vassar, Oberlin, Smith, Clark, Connecticut College, Wheaton (MA). I would not necessarily look beyond the academically balanced Hamilton, which, though superficially not artsy, appears – with what could be the nicest theatre and studio arts building in the country – to be substantively so.
