Colleges that change lives list

Utah, Colorado State (v good honors prog apparently) for outdoorsy plus merit

Alabama has the Blount Liberal Arts program, a residential living/ learning community that might make the SEC thing more palatable. Auto merit might get you to $30k

Are you eligible for need based aid? Or only looking for merit awards? I missed that if mentioned above.

Agreeing with those who say to run the NPC’s. They’re a great addition to the college search toolbox.

I think this year I will be eligible for a need based award.

Is a Utah and Colorado state commuter schools?

Meant to say “are they”…sounds like I’m the one who needs to go back to college;)

Do you think it is very religious? I wonder if there are any other Jewish kids who attend.

Chiming in out of nowhere to say that your financial aid situation will be predicated on prior-prior year’s taxes (so 2019, I think?) – since your financial situation has changed greatly, the NPCs may not be useful to you, and you might need to be requesting re-evaluations at each school you’re interested in.

I think you have a good list for her requirements. A couple of colleges you may also want to consider:

Ohio Wesleyan & College of Wooster- these definitely don’t meet her requirement of nice weather but other than that they may be worth checking out as they seem to check her other boxes and they both give great merit $$. Both have really pretty campuses and cute small towns adjoining them. They are both fairly close to larger cities. Wooster esp has a very academic vibe and I would describe the kids as a bit quirky.

Roanoke College- nice weather and a beautiful location in the VA mountains. Your D would receive great merit $$ and i believe they have an honors program. Kids seemed super nice when we visited.

My D is a freshmen at Elon. She had similar stats to you D and was looking for some of the same things (although she’s not opposed to parties!). She is definitely not preppy and has already made great friends, some of whom are preppy and a few are jewish (we are not) and she says most kids are very accepting of each other. She keeps telling me that she is so happy with her choice. Unfortunately, it was one of our most expensive options because they give very little merit $$. We don’t qualify for FA so not sure how they are with that.

Eckerd has a very active Hillel with Rabbi Ed Rosenthal on campus. There is an active Hillel parents group too.
Check the following for merit and need based info. Eckerd is very generous in these areas as well as many opportunities for work study. ckerd.edu/admissions/financial-aid/types/#scholarship. Contact admissions, they can set up a current student to talk with your daughter.

Will do!

Did your daughter look at Wooster and Roanoke College before choosing Elon? If so, why did she choose Elon over the others?

I think this year I could apply for need based.

Hi @SherieAmour , my D mostly loves CA. She chose it because she wanted to be in LA as she wants to be in the entertainment business. It’s beautiful, yes, and she loves her school. It’s expensive, both the college and the city, and LA has hard parts such as incredible traffic and the industry itself is just so hard to build a career in.

Which school are you asking about if it is religious and Jewish students attend?

I definitely don’t get the vibe that Utah is a commuter school from my friend’s daughter. I don’t even think she comes home in the summer. It sounds like she spends her weekends doing fabulous outdoor things like hiking, camping, rock climbing, boating and skiing!!!

I’ll second the above mom’s opinion that non preppy friends at Elon are easy to come by! My son has both, mostly non preppy, and he’s also incredibly happy with his choice.

Ok. I will definitely be checking out University of Utah!

I found out only 13% of students at U of Utah live on campus.

I think we’ve missed a part. If the family is Jewish and finding other Jewish students is important, check the activities or groups available on campus. Or sometimes, nearby. Many colleges will actively offer not just those but Seders and other celebrations open to all. Sometimes, you can learn more about this on the websites or by calling the school.

You might check out St. Mary’s College of MD, Salisbury (MD) or Denison (OH).
