I recently placed my housing deposit to attend UMass Amherst in the fall. However, the cost of attendance for me will be high (~$23,000/yr, not counting $5000 in loans offered by UMass). My siblings are in private Catholic elementary schools, but the FAFSA does not take this into account. I expected to receive more merit aid than I did (I am valedictorian of my HS class and a National Merit Semifinalist), but it was not to be. UMass was my best option out of the colleges I was accepted to. Are there any schools in the northeast where I could apply late with reasonable hopes of getting a better deal? Any help would be appreciated.
So you will only consider schools in the northeast?
Did you get accepted into other schools that gave you better deals? And if you don’t mind saying, what is your home state?
You knew this was an issue very early this year. Did you get accepted to the other schools…Westfield? UMAss Lowell?
Did you apply to UA Huntsville?
According to this thread, you got a $2000 scholarship to UMass also…plus the Direct Loan.
How much can your parents contribute to your college costs?
In addition, you did ask about colleges where you could get significant merit aid well before applications were sent. You received some excellent advice here.
Did you not become a NMS finalist?
Are you a NMF? Or did you stop at NMSF? If so, why?
What are your test scores and GPA?
WE can probably find you something, BUT…it probably won’t be in the NE…
What is your major and career goal?
How much CAN your parents pay per year?
What is your FAFSA EFC?
Several months ago, you mentioned that you might apply to Bama for their big award. Did you?
CS major?

I am a MA resident who is NMSF and has a 2240 SAT (1490 CR+M).

UAH would give you a very big award. UAH is in Huntsville, and the city is loaded with transplants from all over.
Did you make NMF? If so MAYBE Bama would still award you their award minus the “official NMF” part (which I believe is the $3500 per year stipend). We’d have to contact Mary Spiegel and ask.
Don’t know if the Col of eng’g would award their extra 2500…we’d have to contact Saskia Clayton and ask.
I think Miss State would still award very large merit, but that school may be too “southern and rural” for you
If you want to ask Alabama, then send me a PM and I’ll tell you how to exactly proceed
No time to waste, you have the stats, but UMass is not affordable
