Hi guys! I was hoping some of you would give me some advice regarding colleges that give the most aid. I’m a female interested in industrial engineering, but I am open to other types of engineering also. Here’s some information about me:
ACT: 33 (retaking in June, aiming for 34)
GPA: 4.5/5 or 3.7/4
By the time I graduate I will have 9 AP classes (haven’t gotten scores yet).
I live in IL, but would like to go to college out of state.
Extracurricular Activities:
Spanish Club (4 years)
Engineering Club (4 years- will be president for 2)
Cheerleading (4 years, varsity for 3)
Key Club (3 years)
Computer Science Club (2 years)
Math Peer Tutor (3 years)
NHS (2 years)
SHNS (2 years)
Underclass Council (2 years)
Junior Class Council (1 year)
Senior Class Council (1 year)
If you have any ideas of generous schools, please share!
Not sure it this is still the case, but Harvey Mudd seek out females as the enrollment was so disproportionately male. Also, start looking into Female STEM fly in programs for visiting high school students. Good luck.
Rose Hulman. They were pretty competitive with our in state big ten franchise for DD.
Illinois Inst of Tech and Clarkson were on our radar too.
Consider New Mexico Tech also. It is phenomenally rural. Like unbelievably. I had some friends and acquaintances who were grads. One was a phd chemist at Lawrence Livermore, and another was an MD. Their husbands also had jobs, one was a NMT grad too, and worked as a petroleum engineer.
NMT has a Mythbusting reputation in physical chemistry, appearing on the show several times.
Is this new for Alabama? I’d never heard that before. My daughter had a roommate with those stats who didn’t get anything to cover housing. Students in the school of engineering get an extra $2500, though.
I was asking mom2collegekids to respond about the main UA campus. I believe this student with her current ACT score of 33 would, get a good guaranteed merit package…AND if majoring in engineering wouldmget $2500 additional per year.
I was NOT talking about Huntsville. But that IS another option.
The nice thing about UA is they have Rolling admissions and their application goes live very early in the application season. If this applicant applies, and does the scholarship application (neither are lengthy…at all)…and submits, they will have an admissions decision AND aid within a few short weeks. Might be a nice way to start off the college application process!
My daughter with a 33 act and similar gpa is majoring in CS as a freshman in the fall (which is in the engineering dept in some schools).
Got in to Northeastern U with decent scholarship, WPI with a really good scholarship, UA with full-tuition automatic scholarship (which is changing next year so be aware), did not get into GA Tech (in-state, but didn’t want to go and put no effort into the application), did not get in to Olin or MIT (what were we thinking, lol).
Chose UA because she felt it ticked the most boxes for her. This is not UAH-they are different.
She liked Harvey Mudd but thought it was too grindy for her, Rose Hulman wasn’t in a location she liked, neither was Case Western or Purdue, but their engineering depts were good.
I’d also look at RPI and RIT. My kid decided she didn’t want an all-engineering school, so you also might want to look into colleges/unis that have a good engineering dept, but offer other things as well.
Unless things have changed, Rose Hulman’s top scholarship isn’t that much money, given the overall cost. Have you looked at the University of Tulsa? They are very generous with scholarships, and have a solid engineering program.
Louisiana Tech as a backup anyway
I believe these scholarships are guaranteed
Out of state bulldog scholarship (100% oos fees)
Merit Scholarship at that level is 9000 (3.5gpa)-9500 (3.75 gpa)
2016-2017 instate tuition+fees were about 9000
Cheap app fee, no essays, rolling admission
D had slightly higher but similar stats. She found zero schools that gave her scholarships for being a female in engineering. Here is a link to her results from this past season with merit amounts included:
