I’m searching for college that have both sociology and business majors but i’ve only managed to find boston college, brandeis university, and a few more. does anyone know a few more?
Both business and sociology are common majors, although business may be called something else like management, or may be divided into majors like finance, marketing, etc…
If you are a Massachusetts resident, all of the Massachusetts public universities except the art college and the maritime academy offer both business and sociology. However, you may want to verify that the business majors are AACSB accredited: https://www.aacsb.edu/accreditation/accredited-members/global-listing
But beware, those majors might be in different colleges, award different degrees (a BA and a BS) so it may require extra credits to major in both.
Lehigh University (~5K undergrads) offers:
a sociology major
accounting/finance/management/marketing majors,
business and sociology minors
https://www1.lehigh.edu/admissions/undergrad/programs
Lehigh seems to be fairly flexible about interdisciplinary programs.
I don’t know for sure how easy it is to construct a program across the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Business and Economics, but all the elements seem to be there, and they do list interdisciplinary programs combining business and engineering.
Small liberal arts colleges that offer both business and sociology majors/minors include:
Dickinson
Franklin & Marshall
Muhlenberg
At these LACs, it may be possible to construct an interdisciplinary program (dual major, major-minor, or some such) without crossing the boundaries of separate, stovepiped colleges (/ “schools”).
The vast majority of colleges will offer a sociology major. And a lot will offer business as well, with generally small liberal arts colleges being the exceptions. So look for colleges you like that have some sort of business or management degree, and chances will be good that they will also offer sociology.
If you’re seriously interested in sociology and business, I would suggest focusing your undergrad on a combination of soci and “big data” skill-set classes in stats and data analytics, and then (either immediately or ideally after gaining some work experience) going for an MBA. Sociology provides a great context for learning and applying data analytics skills that are marketable in business, if you go make a point of going beyond the minimum stats and research design/analysis requirements for an undergrad soci degree. Look at this program at Denison for one example - students choose an area of focus, which can be soc/anthro (and I’d imagine they could double-major for a deeper soci background if desired) https://denison.edu/academics/data-analytics/degree-requirements
Yes, lots of choices. And good advice to check if a university/college allows students to major in business AND sociology, which are almost always (or always) in separate schools. Sometimes it is impossible or nearly impossible to major in both. Also, sometimes universities/colleges require students to apply directly to the business schools (for example the University of Michigan, I believe). Sometimes students apply to the business school after they start at a school. Sometimes acceptance is relatively routine if a student meets the minimum GPA requirement; other times acceptance into the b school can be very competitive. You’ll want to know that.
I’d classify BC and Brandeis as mid-size national universities. Others that would be generally similar would be William and Mary, Richmond, Washington University in St. Louis, Wake Forest, Creighton University (Omaha is a dynamic business center and a fun town; school is adjacent to downtown), and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU, or “Crew”) (Cleveland is an underrated city, I think). All of these are excellent schools with very nice campuses, some are spectacular.
Good luck!
I was going to mention CWRU (of course!) They have a single door admissions policy so you can take courses in business or sociology without having to “get into the business school”.
I like what @aquapt had to say about Big Data Analytics…applying it to sociology and/or business is a great idea.
Also you don’t necessarily need to do a double major…you could pick one of the majors and just take the other as electives.
