I’m still looking for good mechanical engineering programs to apply to where I stand a good chance.
I’m looking for a competitive atmosphere where I find good peers to collaborate with on coursework. However, I wouldn’t want an overly competitive environment since I don’t want to hurt my chances for Grad School in terms of GPA, since I’ve heard it’s an important part of an application. Also, I’ve heard about UCs that classes are large and mostly impersonal, and professors are involved more in research, and thus can’t focus more on students. UCs grade deflation is another thing playing on my mind. I would like to apply to colleges with small class size as well. What are some of my options for good mechanical engineering programs in the country?
Rensselaer would match your academic interests. However, I’m not sure about their scholarship opportunities for international applicants, should you be seeking financial support. URochester may be a better option with to this. With respect to small class sizes, Union and Trinity (CT) should be considered.
@MerryLee No I haven’t heard back from any of them. I’m just looking to add one or two more. My parents are aware of the full cost of these universities (OOS, no financial aid)
My bf is finishing up an ME degree at Berkeley, and staying on for M.S. He really liked the program, found the faculty excellent, approachable and supportive, and he got to be part of awesome research opportunities. He has had lots of success with internships as well.
RPI - high engineering focus, tough academics but more collaborative than competitive, smaller/more personal atmosphere (though not as small as LAC), well respected in the industry.
Why are you applying to so many public universities? These are meant to serve the students of that state. You should look into private universities, where you’d receive smaller class sizes and more financial aid. Just my opinion
If it’s collaborative you want you should probably check out Olin College of Engineering for a reach! I have a bunch of friends from there and they seem to have a lot of collaborative assignments where they build stuff like robots.
