My cousin has a 31 ACT and 4.2 GPA and he is majoring in English. What’s the best University he can get into without paying a lot?

His own state public colleges and universities are obvious options. Those stats could earn him some good merit scholarships elsewhere, but might not cover the entire cost of attendance. How much can the family afford? There are many small liberal arts colleges that will offer merit aid, but they are not the prestigious “name-brand” colleges. Many have excellent English departments. The University of Iowa is very affordable, and has a renowned English department. Its Writers’ Workshop is one of the best in the the world.
He lives in Ohio and if I had to guess at income is say it is $85,000-$95,000.
For an Ohio resident with those qualifications, Ohio State and Miami University should be obvious choices. The University of Cincinnati is also a relatively good school that would most likely give him very good scholarships with his marks. Schools in surrounding states that would be matches for him might be IU, University of Notre Dame, or Carnegie Mellon. Hope this helped!
