Colleges turn to coloring books to de-stress students

“… At American University on Monday, its counseling center provided coloring sheets in honor of Healthy Campus Week, noting on its Facebook page that adult coloring books “can help with a number of emotional and mental health issues.” Conditions cited include obsessive-compulsive, eating, anxiety and depressive disorders, as well as anger management and substance abuse issues.” …

Stay inside the lines, people!

Very funny. Who knew there were right and wrong ways to approach destressing? Lol.

Actually, coloring books for older people (teens & adults) seem pretty popular locally. Our book stores carry a variety of them. Themes include geometric designs, floral and fruit arrangements, famous artworks, and even academic related topics (biology and history).

My teen daughter and her friends love them, and I’ve seen older women buy them too. My daughter uses combinations of a variety of mediums – colored pencils, oil pastels, water colors, crayons, oil paint, and acrylics – and that seems to make them more fun. I don’t think she worries too much about staying inside the lines though.

My school has coloring pages and crayons/colored pencils in the library all the time.

I work at a psychiatric treatment program… we use them all the time here.

The fad is fading, although I must say that someone posted a coloring poster and a cup of pencils on a bulletin boards near my office, and people are slowly filling it in.

Cheaper than building lazy rivers.

The counseling center at my daughter’s university has a room with snacks, coloring books, and a big massage chair. Hey, whatever it takes! Having had one kid withdraw due to mental illness, I don’t mind any attempts to keeping this one in!

So boring. I’m probably in the slim minority who hated them as a kid and still do. Oy yoy yoy yoy yoy. But don’t let me spoil your party. you guys all go ahead and color all you want. ;
