Colleges under 10,000 students within 2 hours of Lanaster, PA with Japanese language and a COA of <35K?

We currently have found Elizabethtown College and Ursinus College (loooove Dickinson College but will likely be too $$$) to offer Japanese language courses. Any other options for a student with a 1350 SAT and about a 3.7 GPA who is looking for a COA of <35K. Looking to study International Relations/economics, but wants to study Japanese as his language and study abroad in Japan. Trying to stay within a 2hr driving radius of Lancaster, PA, but open to about a 3hr max.

York College in PA. Don’t think they offer Japanese, but check. Cost would be at or close to your price point.

West Chester (Passhe) has a minor in Japanese. Find Your Path... < West Chester University

Dickinson
Gettysburg
Georgetown
George Washington (assuming you mean undergrad enrollment)
Bucknell
Lafayette
Manhattan College

Will you qualify for need based financial aid?

And what IS the annual amount you can pay for college? Those pieces of info will be helpful.

Indiana University of PA has a Japanese Studies Certificate. Looks like it’s just over 3 hours from Lancaster.

I wouldn’t assume that.

I don’t see getting <35,000 with the OP’s stats.

Doesn’t matter. He has a unique interest. They have seats to fill in that department. He should emphasize Japanese over Economics. And have strong demonstrated interest. He needs to sell them. Obviously it’s a reach for him, but I’m just saying that I wouldn’t rule it out. It’s worth a shot. If he doesn’t pursue it, he obviously has no shot.

Check out St Johns as well they have a big Asian Studies program, they also have combined 5 year BA/MA, BA/MS or BA/MBA options. You are required to specialize in a specific language but can supplement others as well. On top of Merit, they have a bunch of other scholarships available as well. Based on your stats I think you would see the costs under 35K

SUNY New Paltz might be a little too far, but it’s the right size. They don’t have a Japanese major, but do offer Japanese language courses. There is an Asian Studies major Asian Studies | SUNY New Paltz

Gettysburg is expensive but may give a lot of aid. It looks like they have a really interesting Japanese language, studies, and study abroad program.

Hmm, within 2 hours of Lancaster, PA. Is this the Mare of Easttown? Student obviously craves Turkey Hill or Wawa Hoagies. Just kidding.

Are you already looking at Temple? I know it’s bigger than you want, but their Japan campus could compensate for that. His majors of interest are offered at Temple Japan (which has only 1300 undergrads - 38% from the US - and estimated average yearly cost under 30K) as well as at the main campus in Philadelphia. Getting enough merit to make the main campus affordable is not a slam dunk, but possible - is the 3.7 weighted or unweighted?

It’s a little further than your preference, but Denison University in Ohio had a good Japanese department and they are often generous with merit. My son, who is not studying in the department but grew up in Tokyo, has had a lot of interaction with them - his initial assigned advisor was a Japanese studies professor and he sometimes tutors beginning language students. I’ve been very impressed by how welcoming the department has been even though my son’s academic interests lie elsewhere, and the professors he has interacted with all seem terrific, with interesting research areas. There are also a number of study abroad programs in Japan. (I recommend Kyoto!)

FWIW If your son studies abroad in Japan as planned, it will be longer than a 2 hour drive away.

The University of Puget Sound is well within 2 hours drive of SEATAC (the Seattle / Tacoma airpost). Or move to the Seattle area and the drive will be much less than a 2 hour journey.

Why the need or desire to limit the distance to a 2 hour drive if attending a residential school ?

Have you looked into your state school options in Pennsylvania ?

Maybe this website will help:

West Chester is a little bit larger than he would like, but it’s on the list! We love the town of West Chester. Best PASSHE option in my opinion.

Unfortunately, no.

We already have 1 in college and are paying about 30K/year for him, so we really need to stay at a max of around 35K. We have a small 529 for each, but are trying to pay mostly out of pocket.
