Colleges waiving the application fee

Colleges waiving the application fee

My sister told me today that sometimes, at college fairs especially, schools will give students an opportunity to have their application fee waived. Would it be weird to ask? Are they generally going to respond with a question of whether we can afford it? If so, I would lean toward not asking – it might be embarrassing and may reflect negatively on us. We are not rich, but I’m guessing our expected EFC will be 100% of tuition - so I guess we can “afford it”, but my son (SAT 2320, #1 in his class) is going to be applying to quite a few schools and that can add up. I’m just afraid that they may look at us as asking for money that is allocated toward the poor.

So the question is should I ask or not?

I don’t see any harm in your son asking. But (as difficult as it may be), you should refrain from asking questions and let your son do the talking/asking unless you are at a parent’s session. This is your son’s opportunity to make an impression and connect with the school representative.
