Colleges which offer undergraduate musical theatre degrees

I think why most of the schools were missing from our list is because they have Bas with an emphasis or concentration in MT and not an actual degree in MT. Indiana and a few others were just unintentional omits but the rest are still questionable for me. I included them in my update but don’t know that they will stay on the mtEA list because we are really only interested in programs that confer degrees in MT.

The thing is, your organization can develop whatever criteria it wishes to compile a list.

The list on CC includes BAs and includes Theater programs that offer MT concentrations (some schools may use the term “Emphasis” or the term “Track”).

For that matter, even YOUR list has Wagner for instance.

I believe those who visit this forum are looking for colleges that offer programs in MT whether these are BFA, BM, or BA or whether a Theater Dept. has a concentration or emphasis or track option in MT. They want to study and train in MT. The Big List lists all these options. In fact, CC has many threads where some are seeking BA schools for MT and there are not a lot of BA programs where you can concentrate on MT and so the more CC can list, the better.

In fact, even the non-audition ones are of great interest to our members here because they need to build a WELL BALANCED list of colleges and “odds” and need some non-audition back ups and still want to study MT.

I just realized that Christopher Newport University is missing from CC’s Big List and they have a MT Track in the Theater Major that is non-audition and in fact, I have a student who used this as their back up non-audition school this year and is admitted already.

I will add that it should be listed as Westminster College of the Arts at Rider University now. In their School of Fine and Performing Arts, one can earn a BM in Music Theater.

One thing also to consider is your point about offering a “degree IN Musical Theater”. I think people are looking to train in MT. My kid went to NYU/Tisch/CAP21. ALL of the degrees in Tisch, whether for ACTING OR for MUSICAL THEATRE are ALL called: BFA in Drama. But anyone who knows Tisch/CAP21, knows that is a MT conservatory training program. Tisch doesn’t have BFA in Acting degrees OR BFA in MT degrees. It only confers a BFA in Drama, whether you have trained in one of their acting studios or their MT studio. Most would consider my kid and her peers as having gotten a BFA in MT even if that is not the official name of the degree, having trained at CAP21, a MT conservatory. Likewise, someone who trained in Stella Adler Studio at NYU/Tisch would be thought of as having a BFA in Acting by those in the industry, even though the degree is officially called BFA Drama.

I am not new to CC. I am also very computer literate and competent at navigating websites. And I found the “new list” posted in this thread to be potentially confusing because 1) it was posted in a manner that purports to be a definitive list 2) it is different from the pegged list at the top of the MT forum, 3) there was no disclosure that it was a list compiled by an organization that has its own criteria for inclusion nor what those criteria are and 4) related to this, schools are omitted that have meaningful and substantial MT training and performing opportunities and are important players in the scope of colleges that those interested in MT might want to include on their list of schools to investigate.

I’ve also been around CC long enough to know that many newcomers to this forum are overwhelmed by the process of investigating the world of MT college programs and training and many get confused about how to navigate CC and find what they are looking for. A thread that promotes discussion about revising the “Big List” of schools, adding new ones, updating degrees offered by old ones, can be informative. Perhaps, utepsong, your initial post would have been more useful and less puzzling if you had explained what you were posting, its purpose and why you were posting it, did not initially leave undisclosed that it was a list promulgated by a particular organization based on certain criteria and invited comment about the list and schools.

A posting about your organization, its mission, how it compiled the list and the criteria used would generate far more discussion of substance, as opposed to confusion, compared to simply posting a bald faced list which could be inaccurately construed as purporting to be a definitive list.

I can say from the perspective of someone who has been researching college programs for my D, that there are some things that are confusing about this list. The + sign rating is misleading I think just judging from the programs that I have personally researched & my D will audition for. She is auditioning at four schools & your initial list did not even have one of them on there. (IU Bloomington, although I see you have since added it.) You have a + sign for Ball State but not for IU which I find interesting and really misleading because as far as I have been able to determine IU is as selective as BSU. We happen to personally know students who attend BOTH these programs & have researched both programs very well. The same with Wright State. I would say they are at least as selective as IU & BSU. I am confused as to how you made your determination on that. It probably would have been more helpful to not have the + sign rating but rather just list what schools are “audition” & which are “non-audition”, the approx number of students who audition & the number accepted. Having said all that, it does seem unneccessary to even make this list as the CC forum already has one as others have already pointed out. If I were beginning my search rather than being done with it, I think the Big List would be a better place to start (which if memory serves, I did!)

Two other Pennsylvania schools missing from this “list”: Temple University which offers a BA in theater with an audition based MT program and Muhlenberg which also offers a BA in theater, has an optional audition for talent scholarships and where those interested in studying MT add classes in voice and dance from the highly regarded music and dance departments and participate in the fully staged musicals during the school year as well as the professional regional summer stock series held at the school where students may be cast to work side by side with professional MT performers. The schools are important players for those who want to combine fuller liberal arts studies as part of their MT training. Both schools have also produced graduates who go on and perform professionally. Any reason they were left off the “list”?

just a small wording error:
Emerson **College/b

For now, I think those new to the MT college selection process who are looking for all types of MT degree programs, are best served by consulting CC’s Big List pinned to the top of this forum. The list on this thread HERE has only ONE new college added, but others omitted. The criteria for colleges to be included on this list HERE appears to be different and has been somewhat clarified, though was not at first (rather it appeared as a definitive list of all colleges which offer UG MT degrees).

As has been the case for many years on CC’s MT Forum, members are asked to make CC know if there are any additions to be made to the Big List and as in the past, CC has added to that list and updated it. That list represents schools where you can study MT…all types of degrees. CC has members, in fact, seeking a variety of types of degrees. As well, even those seeking BFA degrees almost always are looking for some BA options where they can study MT to round out their list since BFA programs are highly selective.

BTW, CC’s Big List of MT College has Emerson listed as Emerson College, which is indeed the name of that college.

Pace University in New York City is not listed. It offers a BFA in MT and a BA in Theatre Arts both with or without a Dance minor.

CWU offers a BFA in Musical Theatre and requires audition.

The idea of two lists on the MT Forum of all MT colleges seems rather redundant to me. Pace is already on CC’s Big List of MT Colleges (seems weird that it is not on this list here though). CWU I’m sure will be added to CC’s list.

CC’s list is an attempt that is ongoing (for years now) to include ALL colleges that offer MT training, no matter the type of degree program. The list on this thread has been somewhat clarified but represents something else, I think.

This is great! I have learned of at least 3 or 4 programs that I didn’t know about by starting this thread. At no time anywhere on the thread do I state that this list (which has already been updated once and should be again soon) is definitive or represents mtEA or any other organization. Soozievt asked where the list came from initially and I said it was something I had started to put together for mtEA, but it has already morphed into something else just from 24 hours on CC. Keep the information coming, it is great to hear about these other programs or clarifications about the programs listed. There is no denying that having a thread about all of the variety of programs gives a place for people to post and ask question and make corrections. Again, this thread is only seeking information not claiming to be definitive! The big list shouldn’t make that claim either unless it is updated more frequently.

A couple of questions…

Hasn’t Santa Fe closed? Or its MT program? I thought I remembered reading that last year, but I can’t remember if I read it on CC…

Also, Last time I checked, SUNY New Paltz’s BA was in Theater, not MT specifically… Has that changed as well?

Santa Fe still list their BFA as specializing in either MT or Acting and you are correct SUNY, New Paltz is a BA in Theatre without specialization in MT. Anyone have any differnt information?

Utepsong…we truly don’t need two lists. It is untrue about the Big List not being updated. Every time a member has an update, the keepers of the Big List added it. Doctorjohn, a long time CCer, head of Otterbein’s program, has had access to that list when it was on Geocities, I believe and updated the list every time something new came up. This past late October, it was made known that the Yahoo was closing out Geocities. Doctorjohn saved the list and it was provided to post as a thread on CC. As has ALWAYS been, any updates are constantly added as members know of additional programs. This is not a new thing in the past few days. Additions are updated when they come to light.

People were curious as to what your list represented when you first posted it as CC already had a list with MORE MT programs on it than your list. Your list was a SUBSET of CC’s list, and the only program NEW on your list was University of North Texas. That is why I don’t see the necessity of a second list on the MT Forum as any new additions can be made known and CC has ALWAYS added to the Big List for YEARS.

You are certainly free to post a second list on CC, but not sure the value of duplicity. In fact, for those new to the MT college search, it may be confusing to have more than one list, let alone a list that is missing what the other list already has on it.

Snoggie, I believe College of Santa Fe was closing at one point due to financial difficulties, but regrouped and the school is currently open.

SUNY New Paltz is a BA by audition program but not for MT. They do stage musicals. I think it should come off the list as it doesn’t offer a MT emphasis, concentration or track. I did not create the list but will have CC remove New Paltz from that list.

I am so happy to see that CollegeMom opened the “Big List” for comments and updated. I am eqully happy that she did it without recriminations or barbs toward those seeking information. Again for all your protesting and vitriol Soozievt I still don’t see what this thread did to threaten you and I am very happy with the new information I have learned from the posters. I will be checking back to both threads for updates. Anyone know the story with Bowling Green?

Bowling Green offers a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Specializing in Musical Theatre through the Department of Theatre and Film. It is an auditioned program. I believe it may have undergone some restrructuring in the past few years. I could be wrong, but think several years ago it was a BS degree.
