Colleges with Admit Rates of 20-59%: Schools You’ve Liked and Why (NO REPLIES)

Scripps College - Women’s college with 4 other undergrad Claremont colleges with adjoining campuses and students able to enroll in classes and socially interact across all of them. It gives the unique opportunity for the best of both worlds - a Women’s college supportive/empowering environment within dorms and CORE classes, and the opportunity to still have a very coed college experience as well. Not to mention one gets a small school with midsize school resources because of the 5Cs collaboration. Absolutely gorgeous campus with great facilities. Cute town of Claremont, and wonderful Southern California weather. A quality school that offers a truly unique environment. The acceptance rate is 30 something percent.

Here’s a school that gets little play time on CC: Dillard University. This is an HBCU with about 1200 undergrads located in New Orleans, LA with an acceptance rate of 41% for fall of 2023.

It recently received a $19M donation from the MacKenzie Scott Foundation, almost 4x larger than the $5M donation it first received in 2020, as some external validation of the great things that this school does. Additionally, Dillard featured in an episode of Malcolm Gladwell’s podcast (and suffice it to say, it was complimentary).

Like many small or liberal arts colleges, students tout their close access to faculty and administrators. But what makes Dillard special? It really focuses on equipping students with the skills that they need to be successful. It has structured supports for students interested in law school, including LSAT prep, a year-long mentorship with attorneys and judges, as well as assistance and advising on the application process (source). For students interested in pre-health careers, it has a 4-year timeline on its website that starts with monthly meetings with the pre-health advisor (among other activities), and shows the commitment to community with seniors serving as a mentor to freshmen pre-health students (source). Its mock trial team and relatively new debate team have performed well at national tournaments as well. And according to the Malcolm Gladwell podcast, they far outpace Harvard in the number of black physics grads produced. So their students may not come in with the highest academic stats in the world, but they give them the supports and encouragement needed to become successful.

And Dillard does this with a student body where 77% of beginning undergrads receive Pell grants. Its sticker price of about $38k for tuition, fees, and room & board is extremely reasonable in the world of higher education as well.

And here’s an article from a couple of years ago on its mock trial team:
