Colleges with aerial and/or circus clubs/programs on campus or nearby?

One criterion on my D19’s college search list is access to extra-curricular aerial training/practice/performance. If you know of programs, please share. It can be a nearby circus gym–doesn’t have to be on-campus. We are more interested in schools on the eastern “half” of the US with a decent engineering program. Thx in advance!

The University of Rochester has an aerial/circus arts training facility nearby and meets your other criteria.

There is a circus school in Philadelphia: http://phillycircus.com/

If it meets your needs then there are lots of schools nearby - the closet major universities to the school would be LaSalle and Temple I think.

Lewis and Clark has slack lines set up on campus though I don’t know if they have training or the students just use them.

McGill University is near the headquarters and training complex of Cirque du Soleil in Montreal.

New College of Florida, Florida State University and University of Central Florida either have campus clubs or are located near circus gyms. I don’t know though about how they fare with engineering.

This is west coast but if your D is interested in Harvey Mudd, there is a Circus Studio in the Claremont village (walking distance from campus) http://www.thecircusstudio.com/.

Second McGill. Oberlin also has Ocircus as a club

There are a number of aerial studios in the DC-Baltimore region. Towson University offers some aerial dance classes. Check YouTube for videos of the dance department performances.

Thank you for all of your replies!

I asked this question years ago for a friend, who ended up studying Circus Arts in Quebec and subsequently joined a circus in Europe. A school I knew nothing about popped up: Illinois State University. It has its own circus: http://gammaphicircus.illinoisstate.edu

Tufts University is a historical choice for kids who grew up wanting to run away from home and join the circus…

PT Barnum (of Barnum and Bailey Circus fame) was on the board of trustees and was a major benefactor.

Jumbo the circus elephant is Tufts mascot.

There is a circus club on campus called the Jumbo Jugglers, but I don’t think that they do aerial work.

There is a circus arts training facility a couple of miles up the street in Somerville that provides aerial work and is accessible via public transportation.

Somerville also has a non-profit summertime community circus for kids where some members of the Tufts community work.

Tufts School of Engineering is relatively small (about 800 undergrads) and tightly coupled to the School of Liberal Arts (which has about 4300) undergrads. It offers 8 different traditional ABET accredited engineering majors (including computer science, which is also offered as a liberal arts major), as well as 4 engineering science majors and 4 cross-disciplinary engineering/liberal arts degrees. Several cross-disciplinary minors are also offered.

The most popular undergraduate major is computer science, and the most popular minor is entrepreneurial leadership, both of which are based in the School of Engineering.
