I’m a high school senior and United States citizen looking for a college which fits the following needs:
I am interested in a major separate from music, something like writing or journalism, maybe music business, but I am open to many things. Really, what I am looking for is a college where I can minor in or take elective classes in music production (as in software and electronic music). This is really important to me as I want to build my skills in music production but don’t have enough skill to confidently submit any kind of portfolio or audition and would also like to study something else alongside this. I am having trouble finding information online so if you know any schools, no restraints on anything, that fit this criteria, please share.
Metro State University in Denver has a music production major, but you’ll need to look up if it has a minor. It is on the same campus as CU-Denver, which has business and engineering as its biggest majors (and a community college too, so you can take classes at any of the schools).
Can you give us some general information like GPA and test scores, and also budget and aid eligibility, so we’re calibrating suggestions appropriately?
My first thought is Emerson. You could major in Business of Creative Enterprises, Journalism, Communications, Writing - lots of options Undergraduate Majors & Minors, Emerson College… and they may have enough music production stuff in-house, but there’s also cross-registration at Berklee through the Pro-Arts Consortium.
But for your purposes, I would probably try to find a school that meets your other needs: cost, academics, location, size, and “vibe.” Because most schools will have some classes in music technology and then have access to a studio.
Or look at the list I send you and see if any of them meet those other needs.
Some production programs may not require a portfolio or audition.
There can be problems attending a school with a BM in production when you are a BA student, because the best teachers, and resources may go to those students. But not always so check that aspect out.
ps even though you are not majoring in music, the music forum might be helpful…read the “Double Degree Dilemma” essay for starters…it is pinned at the top
I have a 3.7 GPA and 32 ACT, and budget-wise about 50k with some flexibility though I’m not sure about financial aid eligibility. I’d really be open to any suggestions though just to look.
Ithaca College has a fantastic writing program as well as an excellent music department offering sound technology. With your gpa you should get a very healthy scholarship.
