Colleges with Luge or Skeleton Athletic Clubs?

Hi,
I know that this is probably a longshot, but I was wondering if anybody knew about any colleges that offered either of these sports as varsity teams, clubs, or intramural sports? I really would love to train but have been having a hard time finding any colleges that even offer these sports. Thanks in advance:)

I don’t see colleges mentioned on the USA Luge Assn. website at http://www.usaluge.org/</a> … You might have to send an e-mail to info@usaluge.org and inquire about college teams.

It sounds like you have to join one of the five USA Luge recognized clubs across the country, and consider going to college located near a Luge club.

Q Do you ski and want to meet and train with USA Luge athletes at your favorite ski resorts?

Now in its eighth season, the VERIZON LUGE CHALLENGE will bring the luging experience to the masses free of charge at ski resorts across the country during the 2006 winter season. This program uses a recreational version of the luge sled used in the Olympic Winter Games. It gives youngsters, 10 and older, and adults the chance to feel, first-hand, the excitement of luge. USA Luge National Team coaches and athletes demonstrate this Olympic sport to the participants and teach the proper techniques. After a few morning practice runs you’ll be able to take the “Ultimate Challenge” on a track complete with banked turns and timing equipment on a Laserluge® made for snow.

The afternoon features timed races, with results flashed on an electronic scoreboard. “Racers” are being timed against a course standard set by USA Luge National Team coaches and athletes. The event is conducted in four categories: men, women, boys, and girls. The fastest times each day, in each age group, win great prizes from suppliers such as Verizon, Duofold, Uvex Sports and DMT. Please visit www.usaluge.org for more information.

Q Do you want to live the life of a luge athlete?

Those who have aspirations of lying on their back, sliding down an icy shoot at 50 miles per hour will have an opportunity to fulfill their dream when they participate in the USA LUGE FANTASY CAMP. This fund-raising program offers a great chance for the public to experience the thrill of a lifetime while supporting athletes and programs of USA Luge. The camp also provides businesses with a one-of-a-kind opportunity for corporate outings, teambuilding, thanking top employees or rewarding loyal customers. During the final day of each camp, new sliders will race against each other for prizes from companies such as Duofold, Team Worldwide and Uvex Sports. A farewell dinner concludes the three-day event.

1998 Olympic silver medalist Gordy Sheer is the camp director. For more information, please contact 1-800-USALUGE or log on to USA Luge’s official website - www.usaluge.org.

Q Do you want to try luge on ice?

There are two certified, full-length, luge tracks in the United States: Park City, Utah and Lake Placid, N.Y. Both tracks offer passenger rides for the general public on a pay-per-ride basis, throughout the season (weather permitting). There is also a shortened artificial track in Muskegon, Mich. Contact the Muskegon Sports Council (231-744-9629) or the Muskegon Luge Club (231) 744-4408 or www.msports.org/luge.htm) for more information.

Q Do you want to try Natural Track Luge?

There is currently one “natural” track located in Negaunee, Mich. A “natural” track luger uses hands, feet, and body position to guide a sled through a twisting natural ice path. Speeds can reach 60 miles per hour. The track is unbanked, hand-maintained, and not refrigerated, allowing for tracks to more easily be developed in winter areas. Please contact the Negaunee Luge Association (906-346-3820) for more information.

For more information concerning these programs, please contact USA Luge at 518-523-2071.

Like with luge, skeleton sounds like it does not center around college teams or college training. Check out the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation (USBSF) website at http://www.usbsf.com/info.htm</a> for information …

Thank you for your very helpful answers:) I’ve emailed the USA luge directr and hopefully will hear back soon. I also mapquested the distance in miles from all of the colleges I would like to attend to Lake Placid. It turns out that it is about a five hour drive each way from Boston, Ithaca, and New York City. However, it is only a two hour drive from Montreal so McGill might be a possibility. I also plan to look into colleges on the west coast and find the distance to Park City. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance :)
