Colleges with no athletic programs

I am currently at a junior college that seems to only cater to athletes. I live in the dorms and realized that I hate being around jocks. Anyway, any list of public colleges with no sports programs, or can anyone offer any suggestions? I searched google and found nothing. My major is physics. Thanks.

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology apparently has only intramural and club sports.

You dont have to necessarily go to a school with no sports to get away from that atmosphere. A division 3 school for instance would have a deemphasized relation with sports and would find the balance between that and academics

Lots of schools are NCAA Division III and that means no athletic scholarships and student-athletes who are really students first. University of Chicago, MIT and other Tech schools are examples.

Also, why publics only? What state are you in-state for?

“I live in the dorms and realized that I hate being around jocks.”

Most junior college students commute from home, so my guess is that your school’s dorms have a large percentage of athletes simply because they can’t commute, or because the commute would be too difficult with their sport and training schedule. When you get to your next college or university, it is unlikely that you would end up living with many of them.

My kids went to a big sports school but were never dorming near jocks. You only faced this cuz you’re at a CC where mostly only jocks dorm.

It’s silly to limit your college choices over this issue. At a univ where many kids dorm, you won’t be around a bunch of jocks.

That said, at many publics and some privates , juniors and seniors do not dorm. They typically live off-campus in nearby apts. If you were to dorm as a junior, then you’d be posting that you hate being around a bunch of immature frosh.

Look at more urban schools, public and private - they all will have sports but its easy to get away from the jocks and the sports mania. NYU, George Washington, University of Chicago, and LACs like Vassar and Reed.

There’s also a difference between schools with a ‘big sports’ vibe and those where everyone likes to participate (often Div III school - some with big ‘outdooring’ programs like Colby, Bates and Bowdoin). Schools like St. Johns have an altogether different, non-jock vibe.

Thanks for the replies. I’m in NM and I already applied to NM Tech. Public schools only because I probably can’t afford a private school.

I’m 45 years old so everyone here is immature.

NMTech is a fine choice for a STEM major. So really, only NM publics are probably affordable to you (and publics that have really cheap OOS costs, like some in the Dakotas).

Yes, I really like the small town atmosphere and I think the school is just what I am looking for. I understand that they have excellent academics pertaining to astronomy. I really hope I can get in.

“I’m 45 years old”

If you prefer (or need) on-campus housing, ask if you can be in graduate student housing because of your age. Many places will allow that. You won’t be the only older student there, and even the young-ish ones will be almost entirely devoted to their studies. It won’t be like an undergrad dorm at all.

Have you run net price calculators on the web sites of various schools, public and private?

Good suggestion. I’ll give that a shot as per grad housing. - No, but I have researched the prices of many, many schools extensively.

The net price calculator is usually the best estimate of net price after financial aid, unless you are expecting to be paying list price. Note that out-of-state publics tend to be poor with financial aid.

Yeah tell me about it. I was accepted to U of AZ two years ago. They offered me a generous 24k package, but the total cost was about 37,000, so I couldn’t afford it.

You probably can’t afford most OOS publics.

How much can you afford to pay each year?

No matter what the dorm situation at a school is, you’re not likely going to be in a dorm. I can’t imagine that many/any univs would put a 45 year old in an undergrad dorm. and many publics don’t have room for transfers in dorms anyway.

Seriously, there is a dorm anywhere that a 45 year old won’t think that the 18-20 year olds in the dorms aren’t’ immature. You are old enough to be their PARENT…of course you’re going to find their drama and antics IMMATURE…they are IMMATURE.

You’ll likely either be placed in a grad apt (if space is available) or be told that you’ll have to live in an off-campus apt.

Are you a vet that qualifies for Yellow Ribbon?

Why can’t you get a passport? (you mentioned that in another thread in regards to study abroad programs.

So how do I get Florida residency when I am from Michigan and attending a junior college in NM? I don't want to take any time off from school as in: move to FL, rent a place, get a job, work for a year then re-apply because I will have the financial aid people wanting money if I don't keep attending. I plan to live in Florida the rest of my life. I wanted to go to FSU or U of FL but not at the out of state rate. I have been living here off and on for the last ten years. I was in the racehorse business and I relocate to a new state about every three months, up until I returned to college last year. I have a Michigan ID card, but haven't been there in about 5 years. I guess I am out, huh?

It sounds like you’re a NM resident. There are some low cost univs there. What aid do you qualify for now? Have you borrowed much?

Did I miss what your major is ??

NMTech has some merit awards for transfers. Will you qualify?

I’m in a dorm now. And I’m out on NMT due to a new requirement beginning Summer 2015 requiring having pre-calc under your belt before accepted. By the end of summer I will only be finished with college algebra, so I cannot attend there unless I wanna wait til 2016, which I do not. My major was going to be astronomy, but reading some of the posts on here, I see it is impossible. I still have four more years on top of the two I just completed as I am behind in math. Basically, the last two years here have been for basically nothing unless I want to major in something that pays exactly what I got paid before I went to college. I get full financial aid Stafford and Pell. It covers all my costs here. I’m likely changing my major to probably aviation management even though no one will likely hire me when I graduate, but at least I’ll have a degree in something. Yes I’m a NM resident but half the school here don’t buy it (incl. NMT) because I have been going to school here since the day I moved here in 2013. I gave up on FL. How much can I afford to pay each year? Zero. I have RA and am not able to use my hands for much other than typing on a keyboard so I haven’t been able to work.

I know that you’re in a dorm at a CC.

I doubt that a univ would put you in a dorm with 18-20 year olds. Univs are different than CCs. You might find one that will put you in a dorm, but usually non-trads are advised to seek off-campus housing…even when a school has required on-campus housing.

You need to be careful because you’re going to run out of Pell and/or Stafford loans. You are probably borrowing the max for independent students and will soon bump up to the max that will be lent to you if you don’t graduate in 2 years.

Since you’re thinking of changing majors, then likely you will take 3-4 more years and run out of aid… You may still get Pell (I think that is for 6 years), but if you’re borrowing about $10-14k per year from Stafford loans, then you will max out in a couple of years. How much have you borrowed so far?
