Hi, I’m a prospective student from India looking for colleges within the budget $15-18k (excluding room and board).
My SAT scores-
Math-700, Writing-690, CR- 610.
I’m in a fix; I got accepted into the fall 2010 batch of University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, which is a great uni, but I can’t afford it.
Please suggest some alternatives, preferably a university which has admission open in spring.
I would also prefer a college decently located; anywhere near major cities like NYC, Atlanta, Chicago, etc. Would be great.
Thanks.

For non Minnesota students, tuition this year at University of Minnesota was $15,500. It’s a steal!

Tuition figure is correct. Time from DC is way, way off. JMU is in Harrisonburg, Va, which is about 120 miles (and 2 hours plus, depending on traffic) from the NoVa suburbs of DC. To get into DC proper will take about another 30 minutes in non-rush hour traffic.

Mary Washington is in Fredricksburg, which is about an hour south of DC on I-95 in non-rush hour traffic. But I-95 is one of the most heavily traveled interstates and there’s often a whole lot of congestion between DC and Fredricksburg.

LSU is in Baton Rouge, LA which is about an hour and a half away from New Orleans, LA on I-10.

alright thanks for correcting me! I obviously don’t know my Virginia travel times very well :)

Depending on the field of study, international tuition at McGill in Montreal can be as low as Can $14,000, which is about = U.S. $13,000.

Pierre…

Where did you get those numbers…some are quite old.

Auburn’s tuition is $22k for OOS students. It hasn’t been $17k for awhile.

Iowa St tuition is $18,500

U Oklahoma tuition is $17,400 (not $10,814)

UMinn - Twin Cities is almost $21,000

College of New Jersey’s tuition is almost $22k

LSU is about $15k

Of course, a student needs to add about $12k-15k for room, board, books, and misc.

What is your total budget - including room and board, etc?

We can probably better advise you that way.

Would you want to start school this fall if possible?

I got my numbers from Kiplinger’s most recent best values ranking. Maybe those numbers that Kiplinger has doesn’t include fees?

^^^

Those websites tend to be a couple of years behind.

You need to factor in probability of getting a scholarship. My D applied to a bunch of OOS schools, most with total cost pushing the high $30s. One she applied to was Univ of Iowa, already the lowest cost Big Ten school, and with her package there was a nice surprise merit award. So, for example, Univ of Iowa wound up being about $7500 less than places like Indiana or UConn. (Iowa also happens to have a great, friendly campus and strong academics).

So bottom line, think about the starting cost, and then factor in financial aid probabilities. With your scores, you can probably get some merit awards.

Hey, my total budget would be $20,000-$25,000.
YES, I’d love to start ASAP!
Thank you so much.

actually mom2collegekids, non-resident tuition and fees for the University of Minnesota is just shy of $16,000 per year.

^^^

You’re right, I accidentally looked at the grad tuition rate.
