Colleges with URM recruitment programs like MOSAIC and Essence of Emory

My son applied to Vanderbilt and Emory. They were both reach schools, and though we went to the information sessions and did some research on the schools, along with the NPC calculation, we didn’t get our hopes up. Turns out, he was accepted to both, and he was invited to Vandy’s MOSAIC and Emory’s Essence program. We had absolutely no idea that these schools have these programs, and I’m wondering what other schools have recruitment programs like this?

At MOSAIC’s parent session, a parent asked, “What’s MOSAIC, and why did I not know about this when my kid applied?” The admissions counselor said that they sent out numerous mailings about the program in the months prior to the application deadline. Well, that’s good and fine, but I’m guessing our kids weren’t on the right mailing list to get those flyers.

After finding out about MOSAIC, I started searching online for information on similar programs but really didn’t find anything other than a couple of threads here on CC. My kid goes to a top public school in Texas, and while the school has annual parent nights to help us navigate the college application process and I’ve been actively researching for the past four years, I had never heard of universities taking these extra steps to encourage URM kids to go to their schools.

So, I thought I’d start a thread and see if others knew about similar programs to help out other URM families. I have a daughter in 10th grade, so I’ll be starting this process all over again in a couple years.

Many top colleges with deep pockets have diversity fly ins to encourage students to apply many of them put that information out by the end of summers. Others you have to call and ask the multicultural recruiter.

At some colleges the under represented status includes first generation to go to college as well as low income students.

Here is a discussion of colleges that offer these programs. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/african-american-students/1539855-diversity-fall-fly-in-programs-p1.html

Always follow up with the colleges when applying. A couple of them had not moved my daughter into the multicultural pile.

I will PM you a list that I had made for an organization that I volunteer for.
