<p>Seven Mids Among EIWA Rankings</p>

<p>ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Seven Midshipmen are among the top seven in their respective weight classes according to the Dec. 12 edition of the EIWA Rankings, while Navy is third in the team rankings.</p>

<p>The EIWA released its preseason rankings on Nov. 1 where Navy nowhere to be found in the top five (ranked No. 6). Thanks to a 3-2 record that features wins over EIWA foes American and Rutgers and some strong individual performances at the Navy Classic and the Nittany Lion Open, the Mids have earned respect. While Cornell still holds strong as the top-ranked team in the EIWA, Penn has moved up to No. 2, while Navy follows in the third slot. Despite a 4-4 record and a win over 20th-ranked Pitt, Lehigh dropped from second to fifth behind Columbia.</p>

<p>Three of Navy’s seven ranked wrestlers are No. 2 at their respective weight class, including junior Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) who owns a 19-2 record at 174 pounds. The 2006 NCAA Championship qualifier suffered losses in the championship bouts of the Eastern Michigan Open (vs. 10th-ranked Steve Luke), as well as the Nittany Lion Open (vs. 2nd-ranked James Yonushonis). Stolpinski earned an impressive win over Columbia’s Matt Palmer in the semifinals of the Nittany Lion Open where he advanced on a fall.</p>

<p>John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) has opened his senior campaign with a 14-4 record at 149 pounds that features a third-consecutive title at the Navy Classic. Heading into the holiday break, Cox owns a 97-33 career record and is tied with former teammate Steve Kovach (2000-03) for seventh on the Mids’ all-time wins list.</p>

<p>Second-year 133-pounder Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) has been sidelined for the better part of the season due to injury, but he returned to the mat Dec. 8 against American only to have his foe fail to make weight. Baker owns a 4-1 record this fall, including a second-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Open and stands No. 2 in the EIWA rankings.</p>

<p>A trio of Mids is ranked No. 4 at their weight class, including senior Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) who has been impressive this season. Miranda shed the weight in the off-season to wrestle at 184 pounds and he owns a 15-5 record. He has turned in a 3-1 mark in dual action with two of his three wins by technical fall over EIWA foes. </p>

<p>Team captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) won 35 matches a year ago and is certainly on pace to match that win count as he owns a 14-5 record at 157 pounds. Jarred has finished in the top two at two tournaments this season, including a third-place finish at the highly-competitive Nittany Lion Open at the beginning of the month. He dropped a tough 5-2 decision to Lock Haven’s 17th-ranked Seth Martin in the semifinals. Jarred heads into the holiday break having won eight of his last nine matches.</p>

<p>Senior 125-pounder Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) needs one win to match his win total from a year ago, as he has turned in a 15-6 record and is ranked No. 4 in the EIWA. Usztics has placed in all three of Navy’s tournaments, including a second-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Open. He owns a 2-2 dual meet record with both wins coming against EIWA opponents - Rutgers and American.</p>

<p>Heavyweight Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) is the final Navy wrestler ranked among the EIWA’s finest. Prendergast, ranked No. 5, owns a 15-3 record and has won two of the three tournaments he has competed in, including the Nittany Lion Open where he earned a 6-4 double overtime win over fourth-ranked Spencer Nadolsky of North Carolina in the semifinals. He won 11-consecutive matches before dropping a decision to American’s Adam LoPiccolo who is ranked No. 2 in the EIWA.</p>

<p>The Midshipmen return to action Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the Southern Scuffle.</p>

<p>Midshipmen Wrestling Squad Back in Action Friday at Southern Scuffle</p>

<p>ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After a three-week break for final exams and the holidays at home with family, the Navy wrestling team will return to action this weekend in Greensboro, N.C., where the Mids will compete in the Southern Scuffle at the Greensboro Coliseum. Navy will face a field that boasts seven nationally-ranked teams and more than 65 wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their respective weight classes.</p>

<p>Navy is off to a 3-2 record in dual matches this winter, including a 31-9 victory over EIWA foe American in its last competition on Dec. 8. The Mids will have two wrestlers in action at each weight class, except 149 pounds where Navy will enter four wrestlers and 197 pounds were sophomore Tyler Moyer (Bremerton, Wash.) is the Mids’ lone entry.</p>

<p>Five Navy wrestlers are currently ranked among the top 20 and all five enter the Southern Scuffle seeded. Navy’s top-seeded wrestler is junior heavyweight Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.), ranked No. 8 in the country and seeded second. He has won 11 of his last 12 matches, winning the Navy Classic and Nittany Lion Open. He has a first-round bye and will face the winner of the Mike Tunick (Duke)-Jeremiah Fennell (Campbell) match.</p>

<p>Seeded No. 3 is junior Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) who is nationally-ranked ninth at 174 pounds. Stolpinski owns a 19-2 record and has won 15 of his last 16 matches. He will face George Mason’s Randy Oates in his opening matchup.</p>

<p>Sophomore Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) has battled injuries through the first half of the season, but is back on the mat this weekend where he will face Kent State’s Daniel Mitcheff. Baker is seeded fifth at 133 pounds and has maintained a No. 12 national ranking despite having wrestled just five matches to date.</p>

<p>Also seeded No. 5 is senior John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) who has produced a 14-4 record at 149 pounds this season. In search of his 98th-collegiate victory, 16th-ranked Cox will battle the winner of the Zack Martin (Appalachian State)-Jeremy Doyle (Cal State Bakersfield) match in his first bout of the tournament.</p>

<p>Senior Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.), seeded sixth and ranked18th, will face Tom Kocher of Lock Haven in the opening match at 184 pounds. Miranda owns a 15-5 record, winning 10 of his last 12 matches.</p>

<p>In addition to Baker returning to the mat, junior Spencer Manley (Ooltewah, Tenn.) will also see his first competition since Nov. 4. Last year, Manley produced a 17-15 record at 141 pounds, but has packed on additional weight to move up to 157 pounds. However, Manley has faced injury over the last two months and has competed in just two matches this year.</p>

<p>“It’s exciting to be back in action again,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett, who led the Midshipmen to a ninth-place finish (out of 32 teams) at last year’s Southern Scuffle. "It’s really a tough tournament that I consider to be a preview of the national tournament. "It’s been a long break and it’s time to get back into it and see where we are at. I think we’re a little rusty right now, but we’ve gotten the guys back into the wrestling room and put them through a couple of tough workouts this week to prepare for this weekend. I’m anxious to see the guys compete.</p>

<p>“Clearly this is an indicator of how our guys can fair in the national tournament this spring. This will be a good test for us, but the key is for us to continue to get better each week,”</p>

<p>Among the 31 teams participating in the tournament, seven are ranked in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Top 25, including No. 1-ranked Missouri and second-ranked Minnesota. The field also includes No. 12 Edinboro, No. 13, Cornell, No. 18 UT-Chattanooga, No. 19 Ohio State and No. 24 Pittsburgh.</p>

<p>Additionally, the field includes four wrestlers ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes - Dustin Schlatter (149) of Minnesota, Ben Askren (174) of Missouri, Max Askren (197) of Missouri, and Cole Konrad (Hwt) of Minnesota. In all, 30 wrestlers ranked in the national top 10 of their respective weight classes will be at the Southern Scuffle.</p>

<p>Navy Stands at Sixth After First Day at the Southern Scuffle</p>

<p>GREENSBORO, N.C. – Navy wrestling junior Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) pinned both of his opponents to highlight a contingent of 10 Midshipmen advancing to tomorrow’s action during the first day of the Southern Scuffle. The Mids racked up 39 points to complete the opening day in sixth-place, 20.5 points behind second-ranked Minnesota.</p>

<p>Prendergast, ranked eighth nationally in the heavyweight division, opened by pinning Campbell’s Jeremiah Fennell 23 seconds into the second period. In his first action of the day, the Navy junior pinned Virginia Tech’s Jim Powell at nearly the same time as the first match, registering the fall 22 seconds into the second period. Prendergast owns a 17-3 mark on the year, with seven of his victories coming on falls.</p>

<p>Sophomore 133-pounder Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) posted a 2-0 mark during the first day to advance in the championship bracket tomorrow. Ranked 12th nationally, Baker pinned Lock Haven’s Anwar Geores 1:51 into his opening match before registering a 10-1, major decision-victory over Ohio’s Terry Jackson.</p>

<p>Junior 174-pounder Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) tallied wins in both of his matches to up his mark to 21-2 this year. The ninth-ranked wrestler in the country began his day with a 9-4 victory against Jake Johnson from Stanford, followed by a 4-1 win against Lehigh’s Dave Helfrich.</p>

<p>At 157 pounds, senior team captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) rounds out Navy’s championship bracket qualifiers for tomorrow. Jarred defeated VMI’s Tommy Cummingham by an 8-4 decision before recording an 8-2 win against Eddie Hutchinson from Appalachian State.</p>

<p>Six other Midshipmen will advance to Saturday’s action through the consolation bracket following wrestle-back victories. </p>

<p>Senior Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) and junior Matt Parsons (Dunkirk, Md.) each posted three wrestle-back wins in the 184-pound weight class to make it through to tomorrow’s competition. Following a loss in the round of 64, Miranda bounced back with victories by major decision and decision before pinning N.C. State’s Jeremy Colbert 1:51 into his final match of the day. Parsons was nipped, 3-2, by No. 15 Rocco Caponi of Virginia before coming back with a pin and two decision wins.</p>

<p>Navy will also enjoy a second competitor in a second event, as sophomore Scott Steele (Baltimore, Md.) joins Prendergast in the heavyweight division. Steele won his first-two matches of the day before being pinned by nationally top-ranked Cole Konrad from Minnesota 45 seconds into the second period. However, the Navy sophomore came away victorious in the third wrestle-back, defeating VMI’s Scott Buhman by a 5-1 decision.</p>

<p>Senior Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) went 2-1 to advance in the 125-pound weight class on Friday. Usztics topped Zach Bigboy from Cal State-Bakersfield, 6-2, before falling to Minnesota’s Jayson Ness, the ninth-ranked wrestler in the country, by a pin. The Navy senior posted his fifth pin of the year 53 seconds into the third wrestle-back against Davidson’s Ben Altman.</p>

<p>Also recording 2-1 records and a wrestle-back win on Friday senior Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa.) and senior John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.). Canterbury moved to 18-8 on the year at 141 pounds, while Cox went to 16-5 this season and 99-34 during his career.</p>

<p>Saturday’s Southern Scuffle action will begin at 9 a.m., with the championship finals concluding the event at 6:30 p.m.</p>

<p>Navy Finishes Fifth at 2006 Southern Scuffle</p>

<p>GREENSBORO, N.C. – Navy wrestling junior Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) advanced to the championship finals in the 174-pound weight class to lead the Midshipmen to a fifth-place finish at the 2006 Southern Scuffle on Saturday.</p>

<p>The Midshipmen totaled 92.5 points over the two days, placing ahead of three nationally ranked teams – No. 18 Chattanooga (sixth), No. 19 Ohio State (tenth) and No. 24 Pittsburgh (20th). Top-ranked Missouri claimed the team title with 179.5 points, while No. 2 Minnesota finished with 176 points, followed by No. 13 Cornell’s 134.5 points and No. 12 Edinboro’s 129.5 points.</p>

<p>“I thought we had a pretty good team score against some quality teams in the tournament,” stated Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. “We had a long break between action and came back a little rusty. Several of our wrestlers fell close matches that would have helped in us turning the corner. We have to win those matches and have eight weeks to turn it around. I know that we are capable of doing much better.”</p>

<p>Stolpinski, ranked ninth in the nation at 174 pounds, opened on Saturday with a 9-4 decision against Kent State’s Aaron Miller. Facing Minnesota’s Gabe Dretsch in the semifinals, ranked eighth nationally, the Navy junior posted a 7-3 decision victory to advance to the finals. Matched up with the top-ranked wrestler in the country, Missouri’s Ben Askren, Stolpinski was pinned 1:14 into the opening quarter to finish second.</p>

<p>Sophomore 133-pounder Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) defeated three nationally-ranked foes in earning a third-place finish. Baker defeated No. 14 Ricky Deubel from Edinboro by a 10-6 decision in the quarterfinals before being nipped, 10-9, by Cornell’s Adam Frey in the semifinals. However, the Navy sophomore bounced back with a 6-3 win over Pittsburgh’s Drew Headlee, ranked eighth in the country, to compete in the third-place match. Paired up with No. 13 Eric Albright from Virginia, Baker posted his second pin of the weekend, winning the match 1:31 into the opening period.</p>

<p>Junior Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) placed fourth in the heavyweight division with a 4-2 record on the weekend. Prendergast advanced to the semifinals by an injury default win before falling in a close, 3-2, decision versus No. 9 Spencer Nadolsky from North Carolina. The Navy junior bounced back with an 8-3 win over No. 19 Janoir Palma from N.C. State before dropping a 5-2 decision to Boise State’s Andy Patrick, ranked 15th in the country, in the third-place event.</p>

<p>Joining Prendergast as a top-eight finisher at the heavyweight class was sophomore Scott Steele (Baltimore, Md.). Steele edged Chattanooga’s Matt Koz, 5-4, in the fourth round of wrestle-backs and advanced to the sixth round on a medical forfeit. Despite dropping an 8-4 decision to Patrick, Steele qualified for the seventh-place match, falling by a 4-2 score against Pittsburgh’s Zach Scheaffer.</p>

<p>Senior team captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) finished the tournament in seventh place at the 157-pound division. Jarred came back from a loss in the quarterfinals to defeat Ohio State’s Jason Johnstone, 4-0, to qualify for the sixth round of wrestle-backs. Paired with Boise State’s Tyler Sherfey, 20th in the nation, Jarred fell in a narrow 3-2 decision. However, the Navy team captain responded with an 8-2 decision over Minnesota’s Tyler Safratowich to earn seventh-place honors.</p>

<p>Navy returns to action next Saturday with the Lone Star Duals against Brown, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in Arlington, Texas.</p>

<p>Navy to Face Pair of Top-10 Ranked Teams at Lone Star Duals</p>

<p>ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy wrestling team will open up the new year this weekend with a trip to Texas where the Midshipmen will face nationally-ranked foes Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, along with EIWA member Brown in the 10th-annual Lone Star Duals held at South Grand Prairie High School in Texas. Eighteen collegiate programs from around the country, including all three service academies, will be in action on Saturday with at least four matches going on simultaneously beginning at 8:00 am.</p>

<p>“I tried to upgrade the schedule this year to include some of the top competition in the country,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. “I want our guys to wrestle against competition that will prepare them for the national meet. It’s a good way to measure ourselves in terms of where we are and were we need to be.”</p>

<p>The Mids, who own a 3-2 dual meet record, will open the competition with a 10:00 am battle with Brown in what will be the Bears’ first dual of the 2006-07 campaign. The Bears opened the season with back-to-back seventh-place finishes at the Brockport OK Gold Tournament (8 teams) and the Keystone Classic (10 teams), respectively. Most recently, Brown placed 37th out of 47 teams at the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 1-2. Navy owns a 7-0 record against the Bears, including a 29-6 victory at the 2005 Lone Star Duals.</p>

<p>At 4:00 pm, the Mids will battle No. 7 Oklahoma who owns a 4-1 dual meet record and six wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their respective weight classes. The Sooners have defeated Missouri Valley (43-0), Oklahoma City (49-0), Central Oklahoma (20-18) and Cal Poly (31-7), while dropping a tough 17-15 decision to arch rival Oklahoma State in early December. Senior All-American Sam Hazewinkel, who placed third at last year’s National Championship at 125 pounds, is ranked No. 1 in the nation heading into the weekend. Teammate Matt Storniolo, a fourth-place finisher at the national tournament a year ago, is ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds. In addition, 197-pounder Joel Flaggert is ranked No. 7, while 165-pounder Shane Siebert and 174-pounder Josh Weitzel are both ranked 15th and Will Rowe is ranked No. 17 at 157 pounds.</p>

<p>Navy will battle fourth-ranked Oklahoma State in its Lone Star Duals finale beginning at 8:00 pm. Like its nemesis Oklahoma, OSU owns a 4-1 record heading into this weekend’s matchups, including wins over nationally-ranked Michigan State (22-8), Oklahoma (17-15) and Cal Poly (25-12). Second-ranked Minnesota handed the Cowboys their lone loss of the season on Dec. 6, a 21-15 decision. Five of OSU’s wrestlers are ranked in this week’s InterMat/NWCA Individual Rankings, including defending 165-pound National Champion Johny Hendricks, who holds the top-ranked position. Meanwhile 133-pounder Coleman Scott and 141-pounder Nathan Morgan are each ranked third in their respective weight classes. Also ranked are Brandon Mason at 174 pounds (17th) and heavyweight Jared Rosholt at No. 11.</p>

<p>The Mids are coming off a solid fifth-place showing (out of 32 teams) at the Southern Scuffle a week ago. The top four teams in the tournament are among the top 15 in the country, including No. 1-ranked Missouri and No. 2-ranked Minnesota. </p>

<p>"I would say we had a decent performance at the Southern Scuffle, but I think we are capable of doing better. I didn’t feel we were at our best in terms of our conditioning and our technical skills. It was clear that we had some time off and weren’t quite at our best. That said, our guys have trained hard in the interim and are ready to go for this weekend.</p>

<p>One thing that we need to work on and can certainly correct is our stamina at the end of a match. Last weekend we probably had five matches decided in the last 20-30 seconds. Rather than getting the points we needed to secure the win, we lost points and it cost us at key positions."</p>

<p>Six Midshipmen wrestlers placed at last weekend’s Southern Scuffle, including junior Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) who was pinned by top-ranked Ben Askren of Missouri in the championship match at 174 pounds. Ranked No. 9 in the country, Stolpinski owns a 23-3 record this season, including a 2-3 mark against ranked opponents.</p>

<p>After spending a month on the sideline nursing an injury, sophomore Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) was back on the mat for the Mids at 133 pounds. He defeated three ranked opponents to finish third at the Southern Scuffle, where his lone loss was to Cornell’s Adam Frey in a tough 10-9 decision. Baker, who is ranked ninth nationally, owns a 9-2 record this season and a 21-8 record during his career.</p>

<p>Junior Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) heads into the Lone Star Duals ranked No. 10 in the country and is coming off a fourth-place showing at the Southern Scuffle. Prendergast put together a 4-2 record which featured a pair of pins in the preliminary matches. Prendergast is just one win shy of tying his win total from a year ago, as he owns a 19-5 record.</p>

<p>Team captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) has turned in an 18-7 record at 157 pounds in his senior campaign and has placed in three tournaments this season, including a second-place finish at the Navy Classic. Last weekend in Greensboro, N.C., he earned a solid win over Minnesota’s Tyler Safratowich to earn a seventh-place finish at the Southern Scuffle.</p>

<p>Senior John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) earned his 100th win of his career on an 11-0 major decision over Virginia Tech’s Jonny Bonilla-Bowman, ranked No. 17, at the Scuffle. After dropping an 8-4 decision to Kyle Fried in the consolation bracket, he bowed out of the tournament win an injury, but still placed eighth. He owns an 18-6 record this year and a 101-35 mark over his four-year career.</p>

<p>Navy Wrestling Posts 1-2 Record at Lone Star Duals, Prendergast Records Three Falls</p>

<p>The Mids won nine of their 10 matches in the opening bout of the day, defeating EIWA foe Brown, 35-3. Among Navy’s nine wins were four matches that gave the Mids extra points. Senior 125-pounder Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) set back the Bears’ Nate Myers 17-2, while ninth-ranked Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) also produced a five-point technical fall over Chris Musser at 174 pounds. Senior Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) earned a major decision over Matt Gevelinger at 184 pounds and 10th-ranked Prendergast pinned his first opponent of the day, Levon Mock, at 5:40.</p>

<p>While Oklahoma eventually took its match against the Mids by a 30-9 count, Navy lost three of its matches by two or fewer points. Ninth-ranked Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) earned a 3-1 decision over the Sooners’ Joe Comparin at 133 pounds, pushing his win total for the year to 11. Prendergast ousted Brad Farmer by fall at 4:29 and in doing so eclipsed his win total from a year ago with 21 victories. </p>

<p>Sophomore Joel Ahern (Herkimer, N.Y.), who earned his first-collegiate dual win in the morning session against Brown, nearly knocked off the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the country at 149 pounds, Matt Storniolo. Last year’s fourth-place finisher at the NCAA Championship, Storniolo beat out Ahern in overtime, 5-4. In the following match, senior captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) just missed his opportunity to beat 17th-ranked Will Rowe at 157 pounds, as Rowe handed Jarred a 7-5 loss. Meanwhile, Miranda was nipped by OU’s Josh Hinton, 8-6, at 184 pounds.</p>

<p>Navy put forth a valiant effort against the Cowboys in the nightcap, but the Mids’ comeback bid was cut short by OSU. The Cowboys opened up a 6-0 lead with back-to-back decisions at 133 and 141 pounds. Both of Oklahoma State’s wrestlers at those respective weight classes were ranked No. 3 in the nation. Led by seniors John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Jarred, Navy mounted a comeback and was able to take a one-point lead. Cox, who was injured in last weekend’s Southern Scuffle, showed little sign of injury as he earned an 11-2 victory over B.J. Jackson at 149 pounds. Jarred, meanwhile, earned an 8-6 overtime win for the Midshipmen at 157 pounds to give Navy a 7-6 lead after four matches.</p>

<p>Oklahoma State went on to win three of the next four matches, including an upset victory for 17th-ranked Brandon Mason who edged out Stolpinski, 4-2, at 174 pounds. Heading into the final two bouts of the match, the Cowboys held a 19-7 lead. Prendergast got Navy to within six points with his pin in overtime over 11th-ranked Jared Rosholt. Needing a pin to tie the match, Usztics earned a major decision over Chad Ravannack at 125 pounds, as the Mids fell short in knocking off the Cowboys, 19-17.</p>

<p>“We had the opportunity today to get three wins, but we just came up a little short,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. "It’s something we have dealt with throughout the season, but we have to be able to step up and get those close matches.</p>

<p>“We let one get away from us in that Oklahoma match, but I thought we rebounded well against OSU. We were on our heels and a little bit intimidated by Oklahoma, but we talked after the match and I felt as though we fought a lot harder in the last match. Bottom line is that I want our guys to compete hard and go into a match having the confidence to win.”</p>

<p>Prendergast was the lone Navy wrestler to win all three of his matches, however, Usztics, Baker and Jarred all turned in 2-1 records at the end of the day.</p>

<p>The Midshipmen will have two tough matches in the upcoming week. Navy will travel to College Park, Md., Wednesday evening to face Maryland at 7:00 pm, before returning home to play host to No. 23 Lehigh Saturday at 7:00 pm at Halsey Field House.</p>

<p>The Mids are doing pretty good this year, finishing ahead of some good teams at the Scuffle like Ohio State. Not only that, but they came THIS close to beating Oklahoma State, four or five-time defending national champions! Prendergast pinned Rosholt in EIGHT SECONDS! That’s unheard of!</p>

<p>Living in Annapolis, I have the privilege of wrestling for the Navy Wrestling Club, in the room that the team does. In fact, a girl at my school sponsors Joe Baker, the starting 133 lber and #10 or so in the nation. I can’t wait for next year, when hopefully I’ll be in there with them!</p>

<p>Navy Wrestlers Look to Snap Maryland’s Six-Match Winning Streak</p>

<p>ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After producing a 1-2 record at the Lone Star Duals last weekend, the Navy wrestling team will be back on the mats on Wednesday evening when it travels to College Park, Md., to battle Maryland. The two teams are set to battle at the Comcast Pavilion beginning at 7:00 pm with the Mids looking to end the Terps’ six-match winning streak. </p>

<p>Navy, who heads into Wednesday night’s matchup with a 4-4 dual meet record, is coming off a 35-3 victory over EIWA foe Brown in last Saturday’s Lone Star Duals in Texas. The Mids came up short against seventh-ranked Oklahoma, 30-9, in their second match of the day before nearly pulling off an upset against No. 4 Oklahoma State, as Navy lost a 19-17 decision. </p>

<p>The Mids are led by junior heavyweight Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) who owns a 22-5 record and won all three of his matches at the Lone Star Duals by way of pins. Ranked No. 10 in the country, Prendergast has won 10 of his 22 matches this season by pin. Classmate Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) has also enjoyed a stellar junior campaign, posting a 24-5 record at 174 pounds. Ranked No. 9, Stolpinski has lost all five of his matches against nationally-ranked competition. Sophomore 133-pounder Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) owns an 11-3 record this season, dropping two of his three matches against top-three competitors. After missing nearly all of November and December because of injury, Baker, who is ranked ninth nationally, returned to the mat in late December where he placed third at the Southern Scuffle with a 5-1 record and last weekend, he turned in a 2-1 record, including a 3-1 victory over Oklahoma’s Joe Comparin.</p>

<p>Boasting a 10-3 dual match record, the Terrapins began their six-match winning streak on Dec. 1 in a 30-9 victory over VMI. Since then, Maryland has defeated Rider (25-16), Rutgers (36-4), Princeton (42-3), Delaware State (48-3) and Duquesne (44-3). Sandwiched in amongst the streak was an eighth-place finish at the Dec. 29-30 Southern Scuffle in North Carolina, where the Mids placed fifth out of 32-team field. Maryland’s losses this year are to No. 12 Edinboro, 28-12, unranked Bucknell, 22-12, and 17th-ranked Nebraska (27-12).</p>

<p>Three Terrapin wrestlers enter Wednesday night’s match nationally ranked. In what will likely be the match of the evening, senior 174-pounder Jason Kiessling will face Navy’s Stolpinski in the only match-up of the evening that pits two ranked wrestlers against one another. Kiessling, who is ranked No. 17, owns a 17-5 record, including an 11-2 mark in dual meet competition. Stolpinski finished second at the Southern Scuffle, while Kiessling placed third.</p>

<p>Rookie Mike Letts is ranked No. 13 at 174 pounds where he owns a 20-3 record and has just one blemish on his dual-meet ledger this winter. He, too, finished third at the Southern Scuffle. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor is ranked No. 16 at 197 pounds. Taylor is 10-2 in dual meets this season and owns a 16-6 overall record.</p>

<p>*** There will also be a men’s basketball game played at the Comcast Center on Wednesday night, so parking will be limited. Fans attending the wrestling match will be able to park free of charge in Lot 1, located directly off of Campus Drive in front of Ludwig Field. The Department of Transportation Services will run a shuttle from the lot to Comcast Center beginning at 6:00 pm. Spectators can also park in the Regents Drive Garage for $5. </p>

<p>COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Navy wrestling team extended its winning streak over Maryland (10-4) Wednesday night, as the newly-ranked Midshipmen thumped the Terps, 25-12, at the Comcast Pavilion in College Park. Ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Poll released on Tuesday, Navy claimed wins in seven of the eight matches to improve to 5-4 in dual meet action this winter, while snapping the Terrapins’ six-match winning streak.</p>

<p>“We came out and competed hard tonight,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. “I was really pleased with how well we came prepared and competed. We need to carry that intensity and focus over into Saturday’s matchup against Lehigh.”</p>

<p>Navy senior Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) schooled second-year 125-pounder James Knox, as he jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and a near fall. Usztics extended his lead to 8-0 with an escape to start the second period and a takedown. Knox finally got on the scoreboard with an escape to open the final period before Usztics got in one last takedown to earn an 11-1 major decision and give the Mids a 4-0 lead.</p>

<p>Ninth-ranked Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) pushed the Mids’ lead to 7-0 with a 12-5 decision at 133 pounds over Annapolis, Md., native Jon Kohler. </p>

<p>The Terps finally got on the scoreboard following a close 5-4 decision by 13th-ranked Alex Krom over Navy senior Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa.) at 141 pounds. After a scoreless opening period, Canterbury went up 1-0 in the second period with an escape. The deciding period was full of action as Krom knotted the score by escaping from the bottom position. Krom earned two points for a reversal, followed by a Canterbury reversal, followed by another Krom reversal as the Terps held a 5-3 advantage. After Krom is cautioned, Canterbury got to within one on an escape, but his final move to bring down Krom was squelched.</p>

<p>Navy seniors John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) and John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) each won their matches at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, to extend the Mids’ lead to 14-3. Cox turned in an 11-4 decision over junior Andrew Schlaffer, while Jarred dismantled second-year Michael McGill in a major decision, 18-6.</p>

<p>Junior 165-pounder Justin Jacobs (LeRoy, Mich.) dropped a heart-breaker against 17th-ranked Jason Kiessling. Down 3-1 heading into the third period, Jacobs chose the bottom position and escaped. Following a scramble, Jacobs was able to take the lead briefly with a takedown, but the veteran senior was able to escape and force overtime. Just 23 seconds into the extra period, Kiessling scored a double-leg takedown to fend off the upset-minded Jacobs.</p>

<p>Ninth-ranked Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) picked up an important win for the Midshipmen at 174 pounds, as he earned a hard-fought 6-4 victory over 13th-ranked Letts. It was an encouraging sign from Stolpinski who dropped a pair of tight matches to his Oklahoma and Oklahoma State foes last weekend at the Lone Star Duals. Stolpinski improved to 19-3 with the win, including a 7-2 dual meet mark.</p>

<p>Senior Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) faced sophomore Elijah Black at 184 pounds, where he earned a five-point win thanks to a 19-3 technical fall that included a near fall. After the first period, Miranda held just a 1-0 lead, but the veteran took advantage of Black’s inexperience which included three points for stalling. For Miranda, it is his fourth win by technical fall this season. </p>

<p>Maryland redshirt freshman Hudson Taylor, ranked 16th at 197 pounds, wasted little time in adding to his win column for the year, as he pinned Navy sophomore Tyler Moyer (Bremerton, Wash.) in 1:01.</p>

<p>Navy junior heavyweight Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) sealed the win for the Mids with a 9-5 decision over Terrapin senior Jerry Afari.</p>

<p>The Midshipmen return to action on Saturday when it plays host to No. 23 Lehigh at Halsey Field House beginning at 7:00 pm .</p>

<p>ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Fresh off its 25-12 dual meet win over Maryland on Wednesday night, the 25th-ranked Navy wrestling team will look to snap a 10-match losing streak against EIWA rival Lehigh on Saturday at 7:00 pm at Halsey Field House in Annapolis. The Mids own a 5-4 dual meet record that features three wins against EIWA opponents, while the 23rd-ranked Mountain Hawks are off to an 8-5 record, featuring a 1-0 mark against EIWA competition.</p>

<p>“This is a big match for both teams,” said seventh-year Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. "We are still trying to find out exactly how good we are and this match falls right in the middle of a big training phase. The Navy-Lehigh match has always been an exciting one to watch and coach.</p>

<p>“The team has done a nice job of working on its weaknesses over the last several weeks. We’re still in that practice phase…we’re not peaking, but we are doing much better.”</p>

<p>Saturday’s matchup marks the Mids’ fifth match in the last week. Navy turned in a 1-2 record at the Lone Star Duals last Saturday in Texas, including a 35-3 rout over Brown, before snapping Maryland’s six-match winning streak on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Seven Navy wrestlers have reached the 20-win plateau this winter, including 11th-ranked Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.), who leads the Mids with a 25-5 record at 174 pounds. All five of Stolpinski’s losses this season have come against ranked foes, including three in the last five matches. However, Stolpinski turned in a solid effort in his 6-4 win over 10th-ranked Mike Letts of Maryland last Wednesday.</p>

<p>“I knew Matt would come around,” said Burnett, who saw Stolpinski drop two tight matches against his nationally-ranked Oklahoma (2-6 dec.) and Oklahoma State (2-4 dec.) foes last weekend. “His problem was on the technical side rather than the conditioning aspect. He did a good job of working on correcting his errors this week and came out and wrestled a great match against Maryland.”</p>

<p>With 80-career wins, Stolpinski is tied for 20th on the Navy all-time career victories leader board, tying 2000 grad Zane Stickel. </p>

<p>Junior heavyweight Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) has also enjoyed a successful season where he owns a 23-5 record. He has pinned 10 of his opponents this season, including three in the last four matches, and is ranked No. 10 in the country.</p>

<p>Seniors Alex Usztics (Dauphin, Pa.) (20-9), Brad Canterbury (Blue Bell, Pa.) (21-12), John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) (20-6), John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) (21-8) and Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) (21-9) have also topped the 20-win mark this season. Usztics’ last four wins have earned the Mids extra points, including back-to-back major decisions against Oklahoma State and Maryland. His 20 wins this season mark a career best for the 125-pounder.</p>

<p>Cox continues to climb the Navy leader board for career wins, turning in No. 103 on Wednesday against Andrew Schlaffer. One of just seven wrestlers in program history to reach 100 wins, Cox stands No. 7 with 103 wins, while dropping just 35-career matches. This season he owns a 20-6 mark, including a 5-1 record in dual meets.</p>

<p>Miranda enters the Lehigh match with a 21-9 record, including a 5-3 dual meet mark. He has won six of his last nine matches with the three losses by a combined five points. He has lost only two matches by four or more points this season.</p>

<p>The Mountain Hawks have won 28 of their last 29 duals against EIWA opponents since the start of the 2002-03 season, including a 25-19 victory over American last Sunday in Tempe, Ariz. The Ciasulli brothers, Matt (141) and Seth (131), own a combined 32-9 record this season and are coming off a 10-0 mark that featured four falls at last weekend’s Sun Devil Duals. Lehigh will put two wrestlers on the mat that are currently ranked in the top 20 - 184-pounder David Craig and heavyweight Paul Weibel. Craig is a freshman hailing from Florida who owns a 17-6 record, while Weibel is in his senior campaign and has produced a 12-5 mark.</p>

<p>Though Navy leads the all-time series 45-41, Lehigh has dominated as of late, winning 10 in a row. The last time the Mids defeated the Mountain Hawks was on Jan. 27, 1996, in a 19-15 decision in Annapolis. The last time the two teams squared off at Alumni Hall, the Mids came up just short as Lehigh posted a 20-16 win on Jan. 15, 2005.</p>

<p>ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A 5-3 decision by senior captain John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) at 157 pounds gave Navy a one-point lead over EIWA rival Lehigh, an advantage it would not relinquish as the No. 25 Navy wrestling team claimed a 26-12 victory over the 23rd-ranked Mountain Hawks Saturday evening at Halsey Field House. The win snapped Navy’s 10-match losing streak to Lehigh, having last beaten the Mountain Hawks on Jan. 27, 1996. It also marked just the second dual loss by Lehigh to an EIWA opponent since the start of the 2002-03 campaign.</p>

<p>“This was a big one,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett, who captured his first win over the Mountain Hawks since his arrival in Annapolis seven years ago. “Greg Strobel does a great job with his program at Lehigh and he has strong athletes.”</p>

<p>“I’ll be honest, we really didn’t look sharp tonight. I’m proud that we won, but we made some basic mistakes that we haven’t made lately. It’s not always about winning, but doing things right. In the end, we came through with a win and I’m happy for our wrestlers.”</p>

<p>Lehigh took control of the match by winning two (125 & 141) of the first three matches, both by major decisions. Navy sophomore 133-pounder Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) gave the Mids their first win and wasted little time in taking down freshman Seth Ciasulli. He gave up just a pair of points in the match, both escapes by Ciasulli, in a 9-2 decision.</p>

<p>A decision by senior John Cox (Grand Haven, Mich.) at 149 pounds was the first of five-straight wins for the Mids. Cox earned a 4-1 victory over Lehigh’s Trevor Chinn, riding Chinn throughout the third period to earn the extra point for riding time.</p>

<p>At 157 pounds, Jarred earned a come-from-behind victory over Lehigh senior Dave Nakasone, who hails from nearby Ellicott City. Nakasone scored a takedown just 12 seconds into the match with Jarred escaping 10 seconds later. Jarred chose the down position to open the second period, where he knotted the score at two apiece with his escape. Jarred rode Nakasone throughout the third period, not letting Nakasone the one-point escape he desperately needed, while Jarred accumulated riding time. Nakasone finally got out of the clutches of Jarred to take a 3-2 lead with 57 seconds to go in the match. Jarred scored the winning takedown with 19 seconds left and tacked on an extra point for riding time in a 5-3 decision to put the Midshipmen up, 9-8.</p>

<p>Junior Justin Jacobs (LeRoy, Mich.), who was forced to move from 157 pounds to 165 because of a recent injury to Robert Johnston, earned his first dual win of the season in an 8-3 victory over freshman Manuel Schubert. Jacobs entered the match having wrestled three-consecutive nationally-ranked wrestlers, including Maryland’s Jason Kiessling who he nearly upset on Wednesday, but lost a tough 6-4 decision in overtime. Jacobs, however, took a 2-0 lead into the third period, where he earned an escape and posted a pair of takedowns in the final 30 seconds of the match to post a crucial 8-3 win.</p>

<p>“It’s a great opportunity to wrestle alongside my teammates who help build me up,” said Jacobs. "Being part of a team, you move wherever the team needs you.</p>

<p>“On Wednesday, I felt like the switch was flipped and then tonight’s win was great. I feel like I’m making some forward progression.”</p>

<p>Navy earned major decisions at 174 and 184 pounds with Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) and Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) dominating their foes. Stolpinski, ranked No. 11 in the country at 174 pounds, turned in eight takedowns and produced a three-point near fall in his 21-7 victory over junior Eddy Silverman. Miranda, meanwhile, recorded 10 takedowns en route to a 22-9 win over Alex Iacocca. The pair of major decisions gave Navy a 20-8 lead and put Lehigh nearly out of reach with two matches remaining.</p>

<p>Mountain Hawks freshman David Craig, ranked No. 20 at 184 pounds, wrestled in place of Matt Cassidy at 197 pounds where he cruised past Navy sophomore Tyler Moyer (Bremerton, Wash.) in a major decision, trimming the Mids’ lead to 20-12.</p>

<p>Navy junior Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.), ranked 10th in the nation, sealed the win for the Mids with his 11th pin of the 2006-07 campaign, this one at 1:26 against 15th-ranked Paul Weibel. </p>

<p>The Midshipmen return to action next Saturday when they travel to the state of North Carolina to battle the University of North Carolina and N.C. State in a pair of duals. Navy faces the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill at 1:00 pm, before facing the Wolfpack at 7:00 pm in Raleigh.</p>

<p>RTP, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked Navy wrestling team (8-4) extended its winning streak to four in a row after defeating North Carolina and N.C. State Saturday in a pair of dual matches. The Mids beat North Carolina, 25-9, in an early afternoon match in Chapel Hill before traveling a half hour down the road to Raleigh where Navy captured a 23-16 victory over the Wolfpack.</p>

<p>“We came up with some big wins today,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett. “I thought we looked a little flat-footed in some of our matches and we weren’t as sharp as what we should be right now. That said, we had some solid performances by several of our guys, in particular Joe Baker, Matt Stolpinski, Antonio Miranda and Ed Prendergast. We made some mistakes, but I feel like we can work on those errors in practice this week and be ready to go for East Stroudsburg on Wednesday.”</p>

<p>Navy opened the North Carolina match with a 2-1 victory by John Jarred (Kansas City, Mo.) at 157 pounds. However, Carolina evened the score in the following match with No. 15 Keegan Mueller edging out Navy’s Justin Jacobs (LeRoy, Mich.) at 165 pounds by a 2-1 count. </p>

<p>Matt Stolpinski (Westfield, Mass.) and Antonio Miranda (Eugene, Ore.) earned bonus points for the Mids at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Stolpinski, who is ranked 10th in the country, recorded his third fall of the season, pinning Jake Forestiere in 1:52. Meanwhile, Miranda turned in his third-consecutive bonus-point win by posting a 20-6 major decision over Robert McCarthy to give Navy a 13-3 lead after four matches.</p>

<p>In one of the most anticipated matches of the evening, ninth-ranked Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) handed No. 8 Spencer Nadolsky a 7-3 loss. The match marked the third time the two have met this season. Prendergast defeated Nadolsky in the semifinals of the Nittany Lion Open before beating Bloomsburg’s Mike Spaid for the title. Nadolsky, however, earned a 2-3 tie breaker over Prendergast at the Southern Scuffle where the Navy junior placed fourth.</p>

<p>The Mids went on to win three of the final four matches to seal the win over the Tar Heels, including an exciting 5-3 victory by 11th-ranked Joe Baker (Poway, Calif.) over two-time All-American Evan Sola (ranked No. 10) at 133 pounds.</p>

<p>“Joe really looked sharp in his match today,” said Burnett. “He did a great job of controlling the pace of the match. He got the first and last takedowns of the match and looked impressive against a two-time All-American.”</p>

<p>Navy fell behind early in its match against N.C. State, dropping the first two matches at 157 and 165 pounds. Jarred lost a tough 5-3 decision to 19th-ranked Kody Hamrah at 157 pounds, while Jacobs also dropped a close decision, 8-4, to Obie Simpson.</p>

<p>Stolpinski helped close the gap for the Midshipmen as he man-handled Jalil Dozier to record a five-point technical fall. The win by Stolpinski pushes his season win total to 28, while his 10 dual match wins equals his victory mark from a year ago.</p>

<p>Miranda’s major decision over Jeremy Colbert gave Navy its first lead of the day at 9-6. Miranda has earned wins by major decision in each of his last three matches and is 11-1 in major decisions this season.</p>

<p>N.C. State held its ground, taking over the lead thanks to a major decision by 12th-ranked Ryan Goodman at 197 pounds over Navy’s Matt Parsons (Dunkirk, Md.).</p>

<p>The Midshipmen took the lead for good when Prendergast outlasted 17th-ranked Jainor Palma in the heavyweight matchup. Prendergast, who beat Palma just before the turn of the calendar year at the Southern Scuffle, was forced into overtime to earn the 3-1 victory. </p>

<p>Following Prendergast’s win, the Mids went on to win three of the final four matchups, including a 5-1 win by Joel Ahern (Herkimer, N.Y.) at 149 pounds over Joe Caramanica.</p>

<p>The Mids return home to play host to EIWA foe East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. Action is set for 7:00 pm at Halsey Field House in Annapolis.</p>
