COLONOSCOPY How hard is it on you?

There is low-sugar Gatorade…

The prep day is no fun, huh?! Don’t worry about tomorrow – other than post-procedure fatigue, there’s nothing to it. One second they’re telling you to get on your side, and the next you’re waking up singing Lionel Richie. hehe

My post-fast meal of choice was a giant Club Supreme sub from Jersey Mike’s. It was wonderful.

There are other options, my doctor recommended a colonoscopy, and as an alternative I am doing the fecal test which for routine work for people with a low to normal risk of colon cancer works as well . If this turns out to show something, then I may have to do the full one, but I couldn’t see a reason to go through the colonoscopy and the cost (at least on my insurance, it is big $$$).

Really, your insurance won’t cover a colonoscopy? I have the crappiest insurance imaginable since I’m self employed, but the procedure was covered in full.

My guess is that they would not cover a colonscopy so soon after a previous one, or out of network.

My guess is that it wouldn’t be considered wellness if the doctor ordered it for a specific reason. My H had a very frequent schedule because they found issues at his first one. But since the doctor set that schedule for his wellness screenings, it was covered. But, if he went in with symptoms of something and the doctor scheduled one, that would NOT be covered - and costs around $3000.

So unfair. My husband is drinking his first prep concoction at 6 pm Sunday for a 2:00 procedure tomorrow. I’m so “difficult” that I had to start Saturday at noon for a procedure the same time! It was necessary, sigh, because I wasn’t even clean first thing Monday morning. Danged body.

Mine is coming up on the 14th. Ugh. Anyway, I will taking Sutabs. Unfortunately without knowing the procedure, I scheduled the 'noscopy so that my second dose scenario is at 1:30 AM. Good grief. I’m a heavy sleeper so this is going to be a challenge. Chances are, I won’t be able to sleep or to sleep deeply once I go to bed. I guess it won’t be a restful night all around.
One of my good friends had a terrible experience with the pills, going at both ends at the same time. :grimacing: So, yes, I will have a bucket with me.
Wish me luck!

My Dr. gave me zofran to take before the pill prep (both doses)
I had no problems with nausea at all most likely due to the zofran. The pills were great for me. I’ll never drink that liquid again.

Oh, thanks. I’m going to call them.

Do you do the low residue diet for a week prior to the procedure? I had a hard time cleaning out, but if I avoid fiber, nuts and seeds for an entire week prior, it does the job. That’s really hard, though.

Yes, I do all of that.

I just reread parts of this thread, as I’m facing my procedure tomorrow . I have the pills, but I’m a terrible pill taker. I have my pill cutter ready.

Avoiding fiber also goes against the usual recommendations for healthy eating.

So does not eating anything solid for 50 hours, but that’s what I have to do before every colonoscopy.

Healthy eating is not the point here. If one has to suffer for a week eating unhealthy white bread and cheese, whatever it takes to get cleaned out. It is extremely difficult for me to go without fiber and nuts/seeds for a week to get cleaned out, because that’s how I eat, but that’s what it takes.

Just remember tp drink plenty of water with the tablets. You really want to be well hydrated so that any IV lines go in well, and so that you don’t feel crappy after the procedure. (Haha…maybe “crappy” is not the correct word here!)

Hope things went well, @MaineLonghorn and @bookworm!

Oh, thanks for asking! Yes, DH’s procedure went well. The doctor removed one small polyp, which he was sure was benign (it will be biopsied to confirm). DH’s next colonoscopy will be in five years. So he and I will be on the same schedule, a few months apart like this time.

We’ve been fortunate to have the same doctor for a long time now. He’s very personable and known to be one of the best doctors in the area. I hope he doesn’t retire soon, though! I think he’s a little older than I am.

Good news! I hope the doc is a workaholic and likes his job! :crossed_fingers::slight_smile:
