Color and Winter Guard

I have done Color Guard (the flag tossers and spinners in marching band performances) in high school and am having trouble finding these programs at like, any schools. I have checked everywhere: performance art clubs, clubs and organizations in both athletics and in the arts but I can’t find anywhere on any college websites where I would be able to find this information and wondering if I have to directly ask this during my visits this summer. Guard is a gigantic part of my life and of my personality and I can’t imagine leaving that behind in high school. I know it isn’t only a high school concept because I have been to several college and professional competitions so any insight would be totally tubular

In college, football season color guard is generally part of the marching band, so if the school has a marching band, they likely have a guard. Winter guard, on the other hand, is generally NOT school-affiliated, so you would have to look for an independent ensemble near you, which are largely listed on the wgi website. You could also consider doing DCI during the summers.

^Same. Colleges with a big marching band program are more likely to have color guard. At some schools the dance team and color guard are combined, so check out the websites of the dance teams if you don’t see a dedicated site for color guard. They are much more likely to be be listed on athletics websites than arts websites.

A quick glance through the Winter Guard International listings show that colleges like Berry College, Christopher Newport University, East Carolina University, Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Virginia, Jacksonville State University, Missouri State University, Penn State, Purdue, San Diego State, Sacred Heart University, Towson University, UConn, University of Central Missouri, UGA, University of Louisiana, University of South Alabama, USF, Boston U and Miami University have color guards. HBCUs tend to have a color guard fronting their marching bands, too.

You can search for colleges you are interested and look at their common data set. (Google “ Common data a set” and then search for Marching Band under activities. that will show you if they have a marching band.
