Colorado School of Mines Admission Decisions 2024

Daughter also accepted today, after they received her first semester grades last week. In-state, she got just $1K/year in merit. She has 4.3 W GPA and 1470 SAT so I’m guessing her 3.6 UW GPA is why she didn’t get the higher in-state scholarship of $2.5K-$5K/year.

Applied: Dec. 15th (I believe?)
Accepted: Jan. 16
Received $12,000 per year

SAT: 1430
GPA: 4.27
OOS
Major: Mechanical Engineering
10 AP Classes

ECs: FIRST Robotics Team, Volunteer work with local theatre company, an internship with local political campaign.

I’m really excited I got in! Definitely a school I was looking forward to hearing back from.

Son admitted CS - College of Engineering.
$12K per yr x 4
OOS - California
ACT 34
GPA 4.27 (W) 3.88 (UW)
Will have 11 AP classes - - (5 done so far with AP test scores: four 5s and one 4)

Also admitted to CS in College of Engineering at Univ of Colorado-Boulder.
Got Presidential Scholarship ($55K total) + Merit Scholarship from College of Engineering ($12k total).
Both schools are great places to learn & study. Beautiful campuses. Will need to visit both. Congratulations to all others admitted applicants.

Daughter admitted Petroleum Engineering (applied day opened and notified in mid-Dec)
$12k per yr x 4
OOS - Texas
SAT 1420 ACT 30
GPA 3.86 UW 4.40 W (moved from competitive school fr/so year with 5.0 scale gpa where only 2-3 A’s given per class in CO to extremely competitive jr/sr with 6.0 scale in TX where mostly A’s given but 100% is different than 90%) She was ~10% in CO but 27% in TX
ECs Lots of sports at upper JV, lower V level. Lots of volunteering but not really with intention to influence admissions.
Will have 6 AP but only one 3 in Spanish so far

Also admitted to UT Austin ($26k/yr total) and Texas Tech Honors ($19k total). CSM is $46k/yr and is her first choice but will only go if aid can lower cost to below UT. I’ve read that the Harvey Scholarship should have already notified students of interview status but we’re not sure. She’d be on the low end of scholars anyway. I have a friend from LA who’s son was admitted last minute but got quite a bit of scholarship aid so we’re waiting. She’s also still holding on to Tech for the study-abroad opportunities with the Honors college and to see if she gets on-campus housing at UT which is very limited.

@awlcharris Wow, that is great you received money to Engineering at UT (esp as a non auto-admit!). If you go to the UT 2024 forum, you’ll see tons of kids with superior stats were denied, and very very few received money. That will be a tough decision.

Was accepted to Mines with $12K/4 years. Still expensive. Invited to Harvey Scholar, was denied as they stated they had 680 applicants for the 7 spots (1%). Accepted to Rose Hulman with larger merit based award and will be less expensive than Mines. visiting Mines in march and then RHIT in April. From California. Anyone go to any of these schools from California? Would love to hear your thoughts. congrats to all who have a college to go to. what a gnarly process!

@kirkhaven She hasn’t received any money from UT yet. The $26k/yr is the total cost to attend with the transportation zeroed out since we’re local. Sorry, that may have been confusing. She is still “under review” for scholarships but doesn’t expect any from the school besides potentially a departmental scholarship maybe.

She had intended on going to Tech and we had already paid up for the Honors dorm. But yep, we were very surprised at her being admitted to Cockrell, especially in mid-Dec. Most of her friends at her school with similar credentials were CAP’d (start at other schools and transfer to UT). She said one of the prompts was how your class rank wasn’t indicative of your academic performance so maybe that helped. I also think that Petr admittance stats must be easy this year due to the downturn.

DS admitted as well.

OOS, ACT: 32, UW 3.93. AP: 9. Got 12k/year for 4 years. Still cost-prohibitive so it’s off the list.

That being said, he loved the campus and the environment and I’d recommend Mines to anyone. Really seemed to be a very positive place.

As we looked over the cost and what I could provide, I said, “you love Denver. If you can wait 4 or 5 years, come out here with 20 or 25k in loans and not 100k in loans. I promise you… you’ll live a better life if you do.”
