DS got accepted today, Chemical Engineering. IBDP, 1460 SAT. OOS. Provost award $ 8k/yr. Hope you all get good news

Oos, so the scholarship helps but is still 100% more than our state school would cost.
Im curious if any of you that have been admitted felt like the second paragraph was personalized? Just curious because it felt kind of specific to her, but maybe that is just how they feel about them all!
Congrats to those who were accepted, and chin up to those that are not. The universe and God work in strange ways, but trust the system and try to be okay with it, is all I can say.

My son and I just had the same discussion. We think it is not personalized AND that Mines attracts and accepts a certain type of person and student. Very excited over here.
From my older child we’ve looked back on his and his friends experience, and it seems like everyone landed in a university that was well fit for them. I am looking to trust that it will likewise work for all of our kiddos. They’ve all worked so hard.

Son accepted (MechE) with President’s scholarship ($5k/year). In-state. Test optional.
Still need to hear from a few more schools, but definitely happy to have Mines as a contender.

My son checked the portal today and he was rejected. This is no surprise since he did not have the high school coursework for an engineering program, and his academic record was not stellar. When he was a sophomore he was interested in forestry, and last year he was interested in agriculture. He didn’t know Mines existed before last summer.
In a way, this may be a blessing in disguise. He got by in high school earning respectable grades without studying. Getting rejected may prompt him to take his work more seriously. If he wants to attend Mines he can get his act together wherever he lands and transfer. There is also a good chance he will change his major, and he will have more options at other schools that have already accepted him.

We’ll see in February if he gets into Colorado Boulder, which is a reasonable target. It is his second choice and Mines takes a lot of transfers from there. If he really wants Mines he can contact their admissions office to learn what classes he needs to take and what GPA is required to transfer. If he is not willing to do that, then he doesn’t want Mines badly enough.
The good news is that he is already in at three respectable R1 schools - Michigan State, Penn State and Michigan Tech - so he has some options. He just needs to step up his freshman year.

Did your son get into CU Boulder?
My son got into three reaches - Mines, RPI, WPI, but deferred at Boulder. Does not make sense.
Yes, he got into Boulder and plans to attend. He also got into Penn State, MSU and MI Tech, but he really wants to go to Colorado. He was deferred at MN Twin Cities and NC State, which was surprising. We live in MI, and our high school is a top feeder into UofM, yet my older son was deferred there, but was accepted by Carnegie-Mellon and Purdue. It’s crazy out there.
Now he needs to get into shape if he wants a slot as a buffalo wrangler.

Glad he got into Boulder! Hope he is able to transfer to Mines if that is still his goal.
My wife and I both suspect that once he settles in at Boulder he will stay there.
Much more difficult than people think. Current Ralphie is fast and growing bigger every day.

Back in the dark ages when I went there, a few of my friends were wranglers. At the time, I think there were 5 guys (all guys,now they have gals too) who ran with Ralphie. The biggest rule was ‘don’t let go!’ as they needed all the weight to control her. These were not particularly big guys and all lost their feet at some time. Lots of bruises on Sundays!
This is the new Ralphie. Just a baby. This year she’ll probably have 500+ more pounds on her.
