Mines’ official EA date is Saturday but my in-state S25 got accepted today w/a $1k a year scholarship for up to 4 years. Mech-aerospace engineering with 3.7 uw, 4.3 w, 4-5 AP classes already and 3 more this year. Swim team captain, president of physics club that won awards at national invention competitions each of soph-jr-sr years and more strong ecs.
My OOS daughter was accepted today for Design Engineering. She has a 3.94UW, 4.24W GPA and a 32 ACT. While she received a merit scholarship ($12K/year), she has some better financial choices already. I’m not sure what she will choose.
OOS (SF Bay Area large public school) S25 accepted today for mechanical engineering with $6K merit. 3.7 UW GPA (4.0 STEM GPA), SATS: 780M/770ERW, 5 APs under belt and 5 more this year. ECs were not particularly noteworthy for our area. Not a lot of leadership or volunteer work – varsity badminton (no, really; it’s a thing), bike club, physics club, late joiner of h/s robotics squad, summer French language exchange. He’s a good kid though and had a little sparkle in his eye today about Mines. Now we need to get out there and visit!
Congrats! Have you been to Golden before? It is beautiful.
Yes, but not recently, and it was just for dinner on our way up to Snow Mountain Ranch. Looking forward to exploring both Golden and Boulder a bit more thoroughly.
OOS (CA Bay Area) was accepted for Computer Science- Data Science. 4.0, 4.4W GPA and a 1500 SAT. Merit scholarship $14k/year.
Son was accepted OOS (Texas) with $14k Presidential for Quantitative Bioscience and Engineering (maybe Mech Eng). 4.0 UW, Top 5% of large highly competitive public school, 1510 SAT, 14 AP’s (inc Calc BC, Physics C, Bio, Chem) all 4’s and 5’s. Very strong EC’s, Leadership, and Service with a compelling narrative. Hoping to make a run at Harvey or Grewcock.
Mines is a great fit for him culturally as he is a STEM obsessed kid that is very disciplined academically but also loves the outdoors and especially mountain biking and fishing and likes to ski. Cost is a concern if he doesn’t get more aid (hard to justify since he is also accepted at A&M and will be auto admit for Texas) and he’s a bit worried about the cold. I’ve told him it’s definitely going to have some cold spells but it’s not going to be 0 Degrees for weeks at a time or anything and Golden isn’t going to stay as cold as further up in the mountains. He either wants to design medical devices or go to med school. Concern is Mines is great for engineering but less Biomedical but I think that could also play to his advantage if he gets his pre reqs done as Med schools like kids that are different and he truly loves both sides (many kids that do BME are just wanting to go to Med school but don’t want to major in Biology).
Anyone have experience with Harvey/Grewcock? I know they are highly competitive and not just about academics.
My son and I are visiting Golden for the first time in a couple of weeks. Any must see recommendations? We are staying at The Golden Hotel and will not have a car (planning to walk and/or uber).
How long will you be in town? I live in the Golden area and would encourage you to rent a car since you can see so much more with a car, but as far as recommendations in walking distance to Golden Hotel, here are a few restaurants:
- Buffalo Rose - good casual restaurant
- Abejas - higher end, farm to table restaurant
- The Eddy - you can walk the creek trail to get there. Neat hotel with a nice bar/restaurant
- Golden MIll - cool food hall
- Denver Biscuit Co/Atomic Cowboy - right across from Golden Hotel. They serve yummy biscuits/breeakfasts until 2pm and then switch to Pizza
Depending on the weather, a few activity ideas relatively close to Golden:
- Walk the Clear Creek trail
- Miners Alley Playhouse - nice, local theater - inexpensive tickets and could be worth seeing a show if that’s your thing
- Visit Red Rocks Park & Amphitheater (you’ll need to Uber/drive)
- Drive up Lookout Mountain (you can see where the students help build out the famous “M” at the beginning and end of their time at Mines)
- Golden History Museum
If you rent a car, you can be up in the mountains in Summit County (Idaho Springs is close) in less than an hour and you could also explore Downtown Denver and Boulder.
Enjoy your visit
Go to brunch at Sherpa House!
