Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

@TrazCapDEV I looked at the thread from last year, and people who got the email did not get in.
And one of the graduate of my school last year who got into Columbia did not get that email either…
Maybe it’s just a really wild guess, but it looks that it does mean something…
But whatever happens, the portal is the reliable source.

I have a 34 on my ACT. But remember guys test scores are not everything. Not even close!!! From last year’s results I say some people with 36s get rejected and people with 30s getting in.

Probably going to be bald by the time 5 PM rolls around lol I’m like pulling out all of my hair bc stress

*I saw

Not true, trust me. As an athlete who has already received a likely letter, I got the email as well.

Whatever happens happens. Just wanted to let you know so you don’t have unneeded stress on a stressful day. Cheers @lucywonders

@gearsstudio It should be within the next week, right?
LOL if I don’t make it, you might see me on the uchicago thread.
@Yomo710 i have 2300, but don’t worry!

This is not the time to over analyze small details like emails and test score. Let’s just get through the next 6 hours as calm as possible. DONT FORGET TO BREATH :))

@michaelgre That makes me a little happier, but I am not positive about my decision at all…
For most people it will not be good news, but we always just need to see that we have gained a lot when we fight for our goals and when writing college essays.
Whatever happens tonight, life still goes on, and there are many good schools out there that may be a really good fit. And the only bad thing for now is that I will need to write more essays if I don’t get in.
Good luck to everyone!

2300 :frowning:

lol, i’m not getting in…

Hey everyone, wow it’s been a while since I’ve been back on this site (it’s so much nicer now!)

I’m a current sophomore in Columbia College and I’m heavily involved with student outreach and recruitment here on campus. I’m not here in any ~official capacity~ so please don’t see me as any sort of official Columbia representative, but I do want to offer a voice of support. I still remember just how nerve-wracking this time was! I know it’s the most cliched advice out there, but please know that this decision says absolutely nothing about you as a human being. I didn’t apply ED and was accepted RD. When I talk to my friends both here and at other elite institutions about where else they got in, it became clear just how arbitrary admissions is, while we all got into Columbia all of us were turned down from at many of Columbia’s peer institutions (and I learned that for whatever reason most of my friends were rejected from Brown). Remember, admissions is trying to create a diverse student body who they believe will thrive here, which is an impossibly difficult and high-pressure task.

If you’re on this thread, you are probably qualified to attend Columbia. Really. A colleague in admissions once told me at least 80% of the applications they read are from people qualified to attend Columbia. Your admissions officers are lovely, hardworking people who I interact with on a daily basis and care enormously about all of you, even those of you who they couldn’t admit. They truly do work their hardest and fight for as many of you all as possible, but the reality is there’s just not enough space for everyone who’s qualified. Going to an elite school will not make or break your college experience. While overall I love it here, there’s a lot about this place that is far from perfect. I am sure I would have enjoyed college just at much at any one of the other wonderful institutions I could have attended.

tl;dr - getting in here is not a value judgement on your self-worth. You are all lovely, competent people who will be successful anywhere you go. I promise. Feel free to ask any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them. Best of luck to all!

@neuromajor I know test scores aren’t everything, but they do matter. Would you mind sharing yours?

@Yomo710 If you have a 2300, that’s really good! The difference between 2300 and 2400 is negligible.

@TrazCapDEV Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t have minded very much if @lucywonders 's theory was correct :stuck_out_tongue:

@dr0wning Lmaooo, i have far from a 2300. If only I had something closer to the average.

Hi @Yomo710, test scores really, really aren’t everything. I cannot emphasize that enough. As I’m sure you guys know, the range for the middle 50% is between 2160 and 2330 (more fun stats on last year’s class can be found at http://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/classprofile/2019). I get asked this question a lot when I give tours, and in that capacity I’m not allowed to share the answer, nor would I want to. For the same reason, I’m going to choose to not share them now. I remember there being a toxicity around testing on this site a few years ago, and I’m sure it’s not gotten any better. If you’re below 2160 you might get in, but you’ll probably have to have great grades/extracurriculars/athletic ability/recommendations/extenuating circumstances/etc. to make up for it. If you’re above 2330, it can be a small positive (since your score helps to bring up the average of the pool), but it in no way can make up for not being involved in things other than school. The importance of your score is really dependent on circumstances and the rest of your application.

@Yomo710 What average? I think the US average is something around 1500-1600
And if you’re a great candidate, your ECs/hooks/essays can get you accepted  don’t give up hope!

@neuromajor thanks!! that was a really nice message. so i hear you do student recruitment…can you accept me

Is anyone here not ranked in top 5% of their grade? or go to schools without official ranking? How will it affect me? im so scared right now

@dr0wning I got a 31 on the ACT, lol. I’m a refugee with a business and a charity, though. I’m the captain and president of several clubs, but I am extremely worried.

@dr0wning my school doesn’t rank so I have no idea
