columbia dorms

is it hard to get a single room being a sophomore at Columbia?? what are the sophomore dorms?

It’s probably the most difficult year to get a single.

soph dorms are all dorm except carman and JJ, furnald is only soph and frosh, so if you have a high lottery number you can get a furnald single, otherwise beforehand apply to hartley/wallach (extensive app for a dorm), if you get in you are almost guaranteed a single, they’re substance free.

What does this mean? No booze even if you’re 21? It’s already against school policy to smoke in any dorm, to drink in any dorm if you’re not 21, and to do illegal drugs.

i think the penalties r harsher in the LLC…maybe even getting kicked out of the LLC or something…either way the LLC is a disaster and a terrible idea.

this isnt technically true…there are dorms (like hogan) that do not have any sophomores in them and all dorms other than furnald and possibly wein have sophomores only in doubles.

Columbia dorms suck nuts, full stop.

:D

“i think the penalties r harsher in the LLC…maybe even getting kicked out of the LLC or something…either way the LLC is a disaster and a terrible idea.”

i know people who have been caught with alcohol in the LLC and stayed there, alcohol is not allowed, even if you’re over 21, in other dorms if you’re under 21 it’s technically not allowed but since noone bothers to check it’s very easy to get away with. If you go into the LLC as a soph with friends in a suite it’s awesome, because you have a kitchen, a sitting area and a single, it’s “terrible” if you want to throw parties, otherwise it’s a pretty social dorm.

not true about the smoking (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/housing/docs/guide-to-living/policies/smoking.html</a>)

they say that you can be kicked out of housing if you are caught with anything but as confidentialcoll said, it’s not always enforced like that

I probably should’ve paid attention to my floor meeting. I think you’re good with Carman, you just get written up for the first offense.

do a lot of people prefer singles to having a roomate? I know some people like to have their privacy, but wouldn’t it be better to room with people and make new friends? just a thought…

go read the “helpful threads” post and look at the housing section. there are plenty of explanations in those threads as to why a double isnt necessary to make friends

You don’t necessarily make friends with your roommates. Some (like mine) are night owls and you only see them at breakfast. You’ll probably get to meet a lot more in classes anyways.

Most of the sophomores will end up in Broadway and Ruggles, some in Wein, and a lucky few in Furnald.

^some in LLC, some in 600 W 113th doubles, a few in EC doubles, tons in mcbain and tons in shapiro doubles and walk though doubles

yeah, the majority of sophomores will live in McBain, SHP, and Wien. Everything else has sophomores but in shorter numbers, and usually in doubles.

I love having a single but your social life definitely doesn’t have to be sacrificed…just keep your door open and people will come in. In John Jay most everyone is in the same single boat and they all want to make friends.
