I’m transferring as a rising Junior from a community college in NYS to either Wesleyan, where’d I’d major in English and FGSS, or to Columbia GS, where I’d probably stick to simply a gender studies major at IRWGS cause the rest of my time will be occupied by Core classes. Does anyone have experience at either of these schools or particular departments, and can share some strengths or weaknesses of either? I’ve had a hard hard time making this decision.

Well, the diffferences are mostly going to be tethered to the fact that Wesleyan is one the best liberal arts colleges in the country while the Columbia is one of the best research universities in the country. The humanities courses at Wesleyan are taught in intimate surroundings, often in faculty offices located in refurbished nineteenth century houses. The writing community, in particular, is tight-knit and supportive and hangs out at the Writing Center on a quiet, tree-shaded, street near the center of campus. Make friends with author, Amy Bloom. She’s a combination den-mother, big sister and Jedi warrior for the extended writing community.
