How does Columbia’s premed program stack up with nation’s top premed schools such as Johns Hopkins? What’s the percentage of Columbia’s premed students matriculating to med schools?

Columbia has an excellent pre-medical program and easy access to a number of hospitals in the CUMC as well as their affilliates. There is, obviously, ample research available. The stats that I see quoted most often are similar to those of other top schools, 80-90% or so of applicants. However, the number of pre-meds that get into medical school from Columbia is far more due to the caliber of the students than the quality of the program (as it is at other top schools). Further, schools are more than happy to manipulate the data to make themselves more marketable. Swarthmore had a 100% acceptance rate for many years. However, this is because they essentially forced any student that they weren’t confident about to wait until after graduation to apply. It has been my experience that many of the students from the top universities are the ones most likely to apply after they have taken time off at the recommendation of their pre-medical committee. The real question is where is the boundary between committee recommendation and pressure? It is, after all, a disadvantage if you don’t have a committee letter when your school is known for writing them.

Columbia CC/SEAS students are the largest cohort in Columbia Med(Law) School.

^ I will point out that this is a tad of propaganda on their part. While for that year they matched Harvard in number, there are a larger number of Harvard undergrads at P&S than Columbia Undergrads. This shouldn’t be that surprising, because Harvard has more pre-med applicants I believe.

Thank you all for the helpful info.
