Which teachers are we allowed to obtain recommendations from? I understand we need two, and certain universities require that the teachers are from core subjects, such as math, science, english, etc.

However, I wanted my law teacher to fill out a recommendation for me, and the site does not indicate any guidelines for which teachers I can obtain them from.

The only line I saw regarding letter of recommendations was: Letters of recommendation from two teachers - no other explanation.

Does anybody have a more concise idea on this?

Choose teachers that know you well. Columbia does not require teachers from a certain subject to write the recommendations. It also depends what you want to major in. If you’re interested in economics, have your math or econ teacher write it, etc. Also, you should choose teachers from your core subjects rather than a foreign language or elective (unless they are what you intend to major in). =)

Thanks - but speaking about choosing teachers in core subjects, I am planning to be a lawyer, but I am majoring in English.

Would that still mean I shouldn’t have my LAW teacher fill a recommendation out for me? The law class is an elective, but I’m pretty sure that my law teacher would give me a better recommendation than my science teacher since I did better academically in the class.

At my Columbia visit on Friday, they said that they want recommendations ONLY from core subjects (unfortunately). It’s advisable to get them from core subjects in different fields (e.g. one humanities and one math/science).
