Columbia Science Honors Program - Physics

im a new york state student;
ive taken biology, earth science and Math A, i was wondering if there was a lot of math B/chemistry on the test?

How do you get selected for the honors program? Can you just sign up to take the entrance exam and get in if you score high enough?

Applications were due a few weeks ago.

The Columbia Science Honors Program is only for current high school students, right? Is there a special honors program for students who actually go to Columbia?

When do they mail the test admission tickets

I heard from a friend that the admissions rate for CSHP is 16 percent. Did any one else hear that?

According to the info sheet, CSHP was supposed to mail the tickets on April 11. I still haven’t gotten anything (central NJ). Is this a problem?

I got the ticket today. Haha they mailed it on the 15th. I’m in 717 Hamilton Hall. Anyone else?

nope, im in 309 Havemeyer Hall.

Hi all-

I’m a little confused about the entrance examination for the columbia SHP.

I took honors bio last year but we never even touched on the human body-- do we have to know any organismal bio/ human body bio? what topics will be on the bio section?

i’m taking honors chem this year- do i need to know like acid/base rxn’s? what topics do i need to know for the chem section?

As u may already know — I HAVENT TAKEN PHYSICS YET!!! how advanced will the physics be— will it be general or numeric? what topics do i haev to know for thge physics section?

thanks so much for the help! im really confused and really need clarification! if u have taken the test or r already in SHP-- PLEASE RESPOND!!!

Son got in last year after taking the test as a freshman. He had only taken Honors Bio up to that point. The rest of the questions he could answer based on Middle School science courses and things he’s picked up by reading! You can’t really study for it. The Math section was harder, a little more like the AMC than the SAT, in that you had to reason through the problems—they weren’t something you automatically knew how to do. He thought it was fairly easy–but he also did well (128.5) on the AMC this year, as well as the PSAT Math section. Just go in relaxed so you don’t make silly mistakes. Remember, you can always try again in Sophomore year if you don’t make it, and then you’ll have a good idea of what you need to know. Good luck–he loved his classes this year!

all the people that got in before:
what were ur grades like in school (class rank, GPA, etc)?
did every one who got in do amzing on the amc cuz i didn’t? im still pretty good at math tho
and of course physics… ihavent even touched physics yet cuz im talking ap chemistry first. will that hurt me?
I would really appreciate it if someone responded…thanx!!

How do you recommend studying for the SHP Entrance Exam? What specific topics were most present?

What subjects in BIO were on the test— last year in honors bio we didnt even do anything related to the human body or organismal bio, for example.

pLEASE HELP!

miles calm the f*** down

you can’t really study for this, you just gotta know basic concepts of all science fields

The test is not as hard as most of you think. And to tikibu, I got in while taking a course in honors biology and precalculus.

Haha. miles, you do seem to be a bit too worried about this exam. If you don’t get in, LIFE GOES ON!!!

Just rely on common sense for the questions you’re not sure of.

I don’t think I even saw a human body/ organismal bio question on the exam.

Thanks a lot man!

Um, dont worry im not too worried at all-- the ppl in my school work way too hard, not me lol, except in science and math which is what i study in and out of school. Thanks for all your help – just one more thing, wil there be advanced chem (e.g., thermochem and electrochem) on the exam?

I took the entrance exam last year as a freshman. From what I can remember, many, if not most, of the science questions only required some common sense and some rational thinking. For what it’s worth, at the time, I was in a biology class, and in Math B; my AMC 10 score was 125. As for the person who said teacher recommendations don’t count for much… I would have to disagree. I would say that the recommendation and Challenge Math portion are the the two main deciding factors. The science questions weren’t really of the sort that would differentiate between the kids taking the exam.

About the program itself… it’s not so good in my opinion and I will not be going any more after this year. There’s nothing really to be gained that you couldn’t learn on your own in a much more efficient manner. And as for the oppurtunity to work with other kids who supposedly share your interest in science and math, most of the kids just chat with the their friends from school who also happen to be in their SHP class, or they bring their homework from school to do in class.

I’m taking this test tommorow, are we allowed to use a calculator?

hey does anyone know how long this test will be? thanks
