Columbia Science Honors Program - Physics

Can someone tell me the basics of SHP and is it avalable to SEAS students. Also, when do you sign up to take it and is it classes like Physics 2800 or is it something different. Thanks

Theoneo im in 9th grade, not 11th - yea 10ish on challenge, left a few blank on science, none blank on 1st math. If i have the grades and letter of rec, if u are already in SHP, to anyone here, how do i stand with those exam scores?

lol i got lazy for the bug problem and didnt round to a far enough decimal place if i did i wouldve gotten something over .75 and wouldve gotten the right answer

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE APPROX MIN REQUIREMENTS ON THE EXAM FOR BEING ADMITTED TO SHP?

eckounltdboy - CSHP is for high school students. :p

boxesarefun - yeah, well I had some extra time on my hands. =P I’m not that great at problem solving math, anyway.

milesdavis22 - if you don’t think you got too many wrong on science, I think you should be very competitive for SHP. I don’t really have much prior experience, though, so I don’t know how worthwhile my judgment is. But really. Don’t stress. It’s just SHP, and you’re still a freshman. You can apply two more times if you don’t make it. In my case, though, next year is my only chance to participate.

Thanks for the help!

Does anyone know the approx req’s for getting admitted to SHP on the exam section? btw i heard that ghostbusters was filmed in one of the Pupin lecture halls…

Hm I remember on the tour they said Ghostbusters was filmed somewhere on campus. But that was like 8 months ago. I don’t remember anymore.

tour for what?

Ye but its for current students also as I looked through this thread. I’m going to be in SEAS 2010 and I would like to know what this program consists of, is it that you take some harder classes like Phys. 2800 or is it something completely different???

if u made SEAS… ur in there for college… this program was for high school students

Wat is SEAS?

School of Engineering and Applied Science

The other undergrad school in Columbia is Columbia College.

I went on the campus tour and they mentioned Ghostbusters. I was pretty unimpressed with the campus at that point so I think I’d been only half listening.

Are you thinking about going to Columbia U for undergrad?

Yeah. It’s not my favorite school, though. But I guess I should worry about getting in first…

When do they mail the results

The results are mailed out on Wednsday.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were late, though. They were late with everything else.

So if they mail them out on wednesday, we would recieve them thurs-fri?

i really hope that they mail them out on time, so they arrive thursday. I’m leaving for camp on friday, and I’d prefer to find out my results from their mailing than from my parents over the phone. =/

OH SNAP.

I just listened to the recorded message, and it kinda scared me. 1900 applicants, 280 open seats. All results will be mailed to applicants’ home addresses today, tomorrow, and Friday. The office is closed for about a week, starting today. You can’t leave messages, and you can’t get results over the phone.

Wow… that’s like a 14.7% acceptance rate!

I have heard that this program looks bad to colleges. I don’t really see how a program can look bad, though. Besides, with such a low acceptance rate, it should be quite competitive. any thoughts?

I don’t see how the program can look bad to colleges.

I don’t think the program is really THAT competitive, though. Sure, there’s a low acceptance rate, but there were probably many underqualified applicants. In my testing room, there were people who thought the first math test was difficult and left the entire third one blank.
