<p>omg, call me an idiot, but I didn’t know being first generation is an advantage… (just read darthmouth thread – apparently first gen. is considered more or less a “hook”). I suppose they’d tell from the place of birth of our parents?</p>
<p>I think that if you’re a legacy, you indicate as such on the application, and the college probably checks their records to ensure you’re not lying or anything. And man, the dartmouth thread is really scary.</p>

<p>I think “first generation” refers to the first generation to attend college, not first generation to reside in the US. So, even if your ancestors came over on the Mayflower, you may still be a “first generation” if your folks did not go to college.</p>
