Typically, we send an average of one student per year to an Ivy at my school. Last year, it was one to Yale, none in '16, and in '15 it was two (but one of them got into all of the ivies, so, wow). At the same time, it’s 1/50 people, so much higher than the national average regardless. We send a lot to prestigious LACs, but we are a very liberal small college prep school, so it makes sense.
14 of my classmates so far have gotten into harvard and I’m so happy for them!!! but tbh it is making me stress even more about thursday lol
@slytherinballet 14?! That’s so many wow
@mxrxsxa yeah we usually have around 15ish get in EA and 10ish get in RD/ about 25 a year
This waiting is stressing me out. The decisions are all I can think about, and I’ve come to realize that I have never wanted something so badly before. I know that there is another school out there for me if Columbia doesn’t go as planned, but up to now, I can only picture myself at Columbia. I’m scared for Thursday when the little hope I am still holding onto disappears, and I have to come to terms with the fact that I’m not going to Columbia. These last two days are awful!!
Hi guys, I’m preparing for the worst so if you could take a look at my post “chance me for anything” that would be greatly appreciated. Just in case I don’t get in, I would like to see what other colleges would be a great fit for me…2 more dayssss!
my public school rarely ever sends people to ivies and if we do it tends to be cornell and i think it’s because we’re like 2-3 hours away lol
@swimv1017 it might be hard to bear, but i’ve heard some good advice recently. you might just be in love with the idea of going to columbia and saying you got in rather than actually going. i’ve read about this from students online and also heard from some people i know and they all say that getting rejected really put things into perspective for them and made them realize they were just chasing an abstract feeling instead of an actual school for the next 4 years (…if that makes any sense haha). so dont feel bad even if you are rejected; you’ll end up somewhere great nonetheless!
@slytherinballet @idntwnalive4ever do you guys have multiple people applying ED to columbia from your school? i’ve heard that if multiple people apply that the AOs are inclined to just reject people with the bottom 25% stats at that school (so like if 4 people from 1 school applied they would reject one applicant with the lowest stats). i dont remember where i read this, though, so take it with a grain of salt
i would be really happy if i got into columbia
i’m the only one who applied ED (i think im also the first to do so in my schools history) and it would be amazing for me to achieve something like that within the relatively mediocre nature of my public school! ahhh fingers crossed
@kimchimaster my school uses naviance, but its useless for top schools since no one applies to them from my school. my columbia graph has like 3 data points from the past 10 years and theyre not very informative
@mooseyellow i made a parchment account a while back with fake info just so i could see the percentage they gave me :)) im pretty sure i had that exact same number in the mid 20s (im assuming thats the ceiling for chances i guess??)
@1984ad there’s only one other person applying ED besides myself and I’m pretty sure that person is applying to SEAS (idk if that makes a difference in admissions)
I have a friend who already got an email getting deferred from Columbia. I freaked out bc I’m also ED and they said they would post results on the columbia website and on the night of the 14th. Anyone else get anything similar?
I don’t think they always reject the lowest from a school. I went to a small private school (my graduating class was 100 people). We had 8 people apply SCEA to Stanford and 5 were admitted. Of the three that were rejected, one ended up being our Valedictorian and had a 36 ACT, another had a 1590 SAT, and the other had a 35 ACT and was third in our class.
My school typically gets a few kids into ivys (and ivy like schools) but tends to focus more on the highly selective liberal arts schools like Williams, Amherst, Pomona, etc. My class was a bit of an exception though. I believe 5 got into Stanford and two were waitlisted. 2 got into Harvard. I got into Yale. No one to Princeton. 2 to UPenn. 1 to Dartmouth. 2 to Cornell (including me). And 4 to Brown. Everyone that applied to UChicago and MIT was rejected though. Quite a few people get into similar highly selective schools though like NU, GTown, Caltrch, Vandy, top LACs, etc.
@KanyeEast69 Sounds like he is lying tbh
@KanyeEast69 i would ask to see the email because i highly doubt they already gave out a decision lol
@slytherinballet i doubt the difference in schools (SEAS vs. College) matters at all since they have almost identical acceptance rates i believe
so does admissions have a set number of seats for each school or is it just a set number for the entire class (SEAS + CC)??
@kimchimaster my school uses naviance and i checked the chart and idk how many years its complied for but there were 24 people who applied ED on the chart and i think like 10 got in.
@1984ad I know of like 6 other people at my school who are applying ED and I’ve never heard of the 25% thing but I’m hoping thats not true. I’m getting so jittery from the anxiety and these last couple days are really killing me.
@slytherinballet i think stuff like that is totally variable and dependent on the ED round. some years they take more ED people and other years they take less depending on the strength of the pool. the class size changes each year, so it’s not like they have a specific number set in stone but it is certainly affected by the strength of the pools in a way i believe
@idntwnalive4ever wait so your school has almost like a 50% acceptance rate to Columbia ED? i don’t know why you’re that worried then lol, it seems like you have a much better chance than most of us here who don’t come from schools like that, so maybe it’ll come through for you in the end
i’m sure that if you have great stats and ECs and essays that you’ll be a competitive applicant nonetheless !
@RoarLions @1984ad Confirmed lie. Sorry for the confusion or anxiety I might have caused. I was just worried I might have been missing out on something. Good Luck to everyone!
Hey, it’s been such a wild two days— I’m a part of the first graduating class at my high school so we have no previous stats and I’m the only one applying ED Columbia. On Monday, one of my close friends got into Cornell and today another close friend got into Harvard and a few hours later another close friend got posse for Middlebury. Wednesday we hear back from UPenn for another close friend, I’m up on Thursday and that same Thursday i have two super close friends with Oberlin posse interviews and Friday we hear back from our last friend about regular ED for Oberlin. I’ve been dying from stomach pains all week from anxiousness. I wish everyone the best and this is just such a wild time.
Dang my school sent one person to Princeton like 15 years ago and that’s basically been it since then :-?
