Columbia University Grad School Video Interview

Just applied to Columbia Grad School. Dumbest process ever. You have to do a video interview at the end which you submit. They give you 3 ‘random selected’ general questions. Then 90 seconds to prepare. Then the recording starts and you have to speak your answers within 3 minutes to all the questions. Then the video ends and is submitted. Can’t re-record. Unclear how much the video submission is weighted in the process but it is pretty crappy it isn’t an actual interview with a real person. So dumb.

What degree are you seeking? Did you know about the video interview ahead of time or was it a surprise?

Is this the only interview or will they also be inviting students for a traditional interview?

This seems to be a reasonable & fair approach in my view; creating a video makes the interview less subjective as many admissions officers can see & evaluate it from their individual perspective.

My daughter had a few video interviews when she applied to grad school. She knew about them in advance and they were followed by traditional interviews, if invited. They are not uncommon.
