Room 301, April 2nd!

Room 417 on April 2 :)

Room 417, April 16th.

Just curious, is there a reason why everyone here chose April 2nd? :P

I chose the 16th. Everyone else probably just wants to get it over with and don’t need to prepare.

I have a model un conference on the 16th so I definitely can’t do that day

April 16 Room 309 Havemeyer. New York State Math League is April 2nd so i chose the 16th.

I’m room 417!
Question about the application: I sent my transcript in the mail a while ago but it still says they haven’t received it, which is freaking me out because it’s due tomorrow. Do you guys think they might have received it but they didn’t update it in the system?

Also, I picked the 2nd because I’m traveling for spring break on the 16th. So the reason a lot of people picked the 2nd might be because they don’t want to take it during spring break.

to jrp1234

the transcript thing happened to me also.

So I called them and they said they received it, they just didn’t update it.

Even after the call, the status updated about 1 week later.

So don’t freak out:)

Hi Guys,
I am a freshman and will take the test in a few wks.
For those already taking classes, can you tell me how many SHP classes you take per school yr-- for instance are there 2 semesters per school year? also, i know in junior year & senior yr things get tough with SAT’s, college applications, INTEL projects, etc-- MUST you take classes each semester or can you pass on taking a class one semester and then continue the next semester?? i have read posts where people say kids arrive late and leave early, do other homework in class, etc, but if i had the option to opt out one semester and not take the class i would rather do that than show up late and leave early or do other homework, etc. How may absences are you allowed??
Thanks

get in the program first lol. it’s very competitive, more so for freshman.

But i personally dont know im a junior taking it for the first time

@pokemon:
there are two semesters per year of 12 classes each, 8 of which you must attend. (you have to bring in a note with a legitimate excuse for all four that you miss, though.) you can’t skip a semester unless you’d like to be kicked out, which can make it a little tough for juniors. last semester i had to come in late one day after an satII so make up half a class because I had 4.5 absences. According to Dr. Blaer (the very amiable and soft-spoken professor who runs the program), if you’re on the borderline with absences, they send it to a committee to decide. if you have extenuating circumstances (i.e. extended illness), they’ll cut you a break. if you get kicked out, you can’t get back in. i know someone who offered to reapply after missing too many classes and they wouldn’t even let him do that.
some classes are more stringent than others regarding the absence/lateness/leaving early policy. in fact, there are only 2 classes that really stick it to you: programming and psychology. the reason is that these classes are taught by dr. blaer’s son and daughter-in-law, respectively. (yeah, there’s a whole blaer dynasty there.) don’t take those classes if you’re going to cut it close on attendance.

@pokemon, I tried to skip a semester but they threatened to kick me out.

Good luck to all those taking the test! I’m a current senior who’s about to graduate after 4 semesters in the program tear.

To those who have already taken the CSHP exam: about how many questions in the Science section are based on Earth Science? I know enough Chemistry and Biology, so it’s just Earth Science I’m worried about. :P

@masterofpupets, I don’t remember there being very many. I remember it was mostly bio and chem, then followed by earth science, and physics lastly. The only physics I remember TBH was something about circuits, but I took the exam before I’d taken physics so there was probably more.

Whew, good to know I’m not the only one. thanks, dlthf1026! I think I’ll probably call them too…
So it dawned on me yesterday that I’m taking the entrance exam in just 1 week - SO NERVOUS. :P

Exam is one week away… anyone even study?

^not really..i mean you cant really study for it other than review a bit before the test…its more logic.

Meh, i have 3 weeks so I might as well use that time to learn about earth science since i never took it :P

I’m really nervous because I never took biology (our school does physics freshman year). Currently trying to cram a year’s worth of biology in a week… Do we even need to know the names of different kingdoms and phyla?
