Haha, thanks for that tip Maybe when I have a few hours of time on my hands I’ll go through this thread…

Whoa I did not know they reused questions…if we knew that we would certainly not have discussed anything here. ._.

@ninjacat - Don’t bother going back. There are literally like two answers in here - won’t make much of a difference - and they’re wayyyy far back.
I presume you’ve read some previous comments, but I’ll explain anyway just in case other people don’t feel like going back. The easy math section is easy. The science section is fairly easy - know your bio and some basic chem. There are a few questions on physics (V=IR and f=ma) and a few on earth science. The challenge section is, well, really hard but it’s designed to test your thinking skills, not kill you with ridiculous math. (; I just practiced by doing my normal math calcs in school in my head. Learn how to think! You have until April (ish) and the skill will serve you for a long time; it’s worth developing.
Oh, and no calculators allowed. (:

@everyone else - This past semester I took nano. Lecturers rotate and most of them were pretty good, though after awhile the first half or so of the lecture got a bit repetitive (but I think they’re trying to fix that). The last class we spent touring labs, which was by far the best shp session I’ve ever had. If you take the class definitely do not miss the last one! Also, the kids in the class were pretty friendly, which didn’t seem to really be the case in the courses I took last year. It was nice.
Last year I took neurobiology, which has now changed so significantly that there’s no point discussing it, and relativity, which was awesome. It helps to know some physics and basic calculus, though the latter is definitely not necessary. The professor was a great teacher, an amusing artist, and really good at avoiding calculus most of the time.
This coming semester I’m going to try to get into orgo…we’ll see how that goes I suppose.

I took genetics and conservation of biodiversity.

I kinda enjoyed it except that I didn’t understand nearly half of the lectures.

Next spring, I’m hoping to take Experiments in genetics and molecular biology

other choices are neuroscience, human physiology, and organic chem

if you have some hours that you can spend, then i would do it. there are many answers on this thread, so if you have time go look for them,

I am hoping to take experiments in genetics too. it sounds really neat but that was my first choice last time too and i didn’t get it.

I agree that this thread is super helpful for preparing for the entrance exam. I practiced for the challenge math portion by doing AMC math problems. I also just briefly looked over some of the science topics I wasn’t familiar with (meteriology, astronomy, geology, circuits). I had taken at least a year of bio chem and physics when I took the test as a junior so that knowledge helped a lot. I also suggest studying circuits (reallllly basic versions). this is usually only covered in ap physics c but I looked over a general description the night before and it helped with a few problems.

ferredoxin: let’s hope we both take that same class!

I’ll be working in a lab this summer, so I want to learn some basic labortary works.

Can any current/past SHP people talk about the courses they took? Specifically did anyone take Java…?

Is attendance mandatory? Am i allowed to miss more than like 1 of these if i get in?

there are 12 classes per each semester and you are allowed to miss maximum 4 classes only if they are excused. If not, you can only miss 2. Otherwise, you can’t attend SHP anymore

@dlthf1026 I was in conservation genetics too!

And the first few classes were cool but it got kinda boring and complicated towards the end…It wasn’t completely lecture though because we got to go to the computer lab and do cool computer labs like matching the DNA of sushi sample to find out what kind of species it was (we didn’t actually extract the DNA or anything btw. just got a sequence)

My choices for this semester are: Experiments, Orgo, Neuroscience, and I forgot the last one…

where i could find practice questions for math

Hey everyone,
I was am applying for this program, and I was wondering where to send the $30 to.
(and how)
Thanks.

@rolltide1234 - Try googling AMC 12 practice tests? They’re not exactly like these, and some are probably significantly harder, but they’ll help. Make sure you try them without a calculator! :P

@mero - If I remember correctly, you submit it online after completing the application but definitely check the SHP or application website to be sure.

I took Neuroscience last semester, and I really don’t recommend it unless you have a very strong interest in the subject because otherwise it gets quite boring. Right now I’m taking Nanoscience, and I like it a lot better.

I want to get in this program soo badlyy but i am soo confused as to what exactly is going to be on the test!! Like what science subjects, what level are they, what math subjects and what level are they? Please help guys, it would be a dream to get in this program!<3

I’m a freshman too, and I’ve just read the ENTIRE thread :D

It would be so great to get in! Right now I’m practicing AMC-type math questions and I’m going through a Foundations of Science textbook.

I just took the AMC 10 and got a 93, which isn’t that great at all… but I made 2 really dumb mistakes and I without them I could’ve gotten at least a 105. (I went home and solved a few more problems.) I know where to find a whole bunch of tests, but does anyone know any books that would help me with challenge math (especially number theory and probability)?

xquicksilver - nano!!! That class was fun. :D

Silveraurora - I’m pretty sure there’s no number theory on the test. You don’t have to go nuts, just be prepared to think on the spot without your calculator and you’ll be fine! (: You sound pretty well prepared already. Good luck!

mehwish - Read through a few pages back and you should be good.

Hey guys,
I am currently a sophomore and I am really interested in applying to the SHP. However, I am only in chemistry and algebra 2. I talked to people who know about this program and said that it is mostly physics and pre-calc which I have not taken yet… do i have a chance?
Is there specific stuff to study in these two subjects? And also what was the challenge part like? I am taking the AMC 10 tomorrow for the first time ever. Will it be similar to that?

Also I need help with the essay. I have never written an admission essay before so I do not know where to start and what to talk about. Can anyone give me examples of what to write? I really like science and I hope to one day become a doctor or have a career in the medical field. Math and science are my favorite subjects and I favor them over english and history so I am really praying to get accepted into this! It will mean so much to me. Can someone please help me? Thanks for everything :)

I’m only in biology, so I’m studying some basics of chem and physics. If you’re in algebra 2, you don’t have to worry too much about pre-calc. Pre-calc is mainly algebra 2 and trig anyway, so if you really feel like you have to study for math, study trig.

There are 2 math sections. Have you ever taken the SAT? Apparently the easy math section is like SAT math, and the second math section is like the AMC. Challenging and only 10 questions.

For the essay, I would suggest just talking about your experiences in science, and then maybe bringing up your aspirations to become a doctor. From what I’ve read, it isn’t that important. The entrance exam is first thing, and if there are ties, the people look at the other things.

Good luck!

The answers to at least half the challenge math section questions are probably exist somewhere in this thread, the questions really don’t change…

I took it last year as a junior (didn’t make it) and the easy math section were like all easy SAT questions except for 1 question i missed which was like a base 12 number question that i just omitted haha.

The science was really annoying. I hadn’t looked at any bio and earth science for more than 2 years so I was pretty sure I got most, if not all, of those questions wrong. Good luck guys!
