Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

I’m a freshman and I’m taking physics this year (i got a magnet math/sci/engineering hs) and I’m starting my essay & I have no idea what to write! Any help? I don’t know what would qualify as a math/sci “background/ interest”

How important is the essay for the application process? Mine feels rather rushed…

@COMBOnatorics, I’m writing the essay now & I’ve read most of this thread and it seems as if it’s not as important as the test

The test is the single most important aspect of the application. Everything else matters only if your test score is at the cutoff and you tie with other students

thanks so much for all your responses!
This question is for anyone who has taken these classes or is currently taking them..
Where are they conducted? Like I know they are in the morningside campus but are they in classrooms, lecture halls, labs? I was just wondering! Thanks.

It depends on the class. my previous class, Neuroscience, was in a lecture hall. my current class, experiments in molecular bio, is in a lab.

Thank you! Also I have just filled out the online application but I do not wanna submit it yet! I still want to review my essay again tomorrow, but I was just wondering how the fee will be payed. Do I have to submit my application first in order to pay the fee? I do not see anywhere where it says I need to pay but I heard that we have a 30 or 20 dollar fee! Thanks.

ive read a lot of the thread and now am kind of apprehensive about this test…
im a freshman and currently take algebra II/trig and physics and i also took earth science and biology at regents level in middle school (scores in the mid 90’s). all my classes in my school are basically honors courses since its an accelerated school. how well prepared will i be for this test? will there be a lot of chem on the test?

Yeah! How do we pay the application fee?! The March 1 application deadline is coming around rather quickly. I don’t want to be disqualified from the program just because I didn’t pay my fee.

I looked all around the SHP website and the Apply Yourself online application. I couldn’t find it anywhere!!! Help!

well for me at least, once you submit your application, it gives you choices on how to pay the fee (either mailed check or credit card, but at this point since march 1 is so nearby I think the latter choice will be a better option). hope that helps!

hey guyss
i already submitted my app, and i received an email that i can track the status of my transcript, but i cant find it on the website.
care to help anyone?

ahh apps are due tomorrow night! :(

@whatkneww If you sign in to the application website after submission, click “application for admission” and then “check your application”.

oh that includes transcript also? i thought it was just the online app

For the test:
-is the test divided into timed sections and if there are does anyone have any approx time as to how long is each section?

yes it’s divided into sections. if I remember correctly the sections are 30-60 min each… science had 70ish questions, math had 50ish, and challenge math had 15.

@whatkneww
I guess I wasn’t carefully reading your question. I can’t track it either… (Only application status)

when you first log on (here: https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=COL-SHP</a>) it says the recommendation status (complete or not), but i don’t know if you can see the recommendation itself

I think you can only see the recommendation if you did not waive your right. IMO, it’s better to waive your right. There’s an law that states students have the right to see their educational transcript or something similar to that.

i didn’t know it was better to waive my right until i submitted my app and couldn’t change it anymore… whoops  but even though i didn’t waive it, i still couldn’t find it on the website
