Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

^It probably doesn’t matter at all for this program. It really only may affect you when you apply to colleges.

Hey. Anyone who’s taken the test before:

What kinds of questions are on easy math?

Also, if I know:
basic electrical laws, projectile motion in 2 dimensions for physics,
Periodic table, all bonding, atomic laws, balancing, moles, etc for chemistry
Taking bio; I basically know all there is to know about crosses and pedigrees etc

^Am I alright for the science part?

^Also for AMC 10 I can do the first 15 problems pretty easily; maybe 12-13/15 right each time for AMC 10. That fine?

How much trignometry is needed for this test? I an Hon. Algebra II, but they did not cover trignometry at all till now? I just kow the very basic stuff like…

Sine function (sin), defined as the ratio of the side opposite the angle to the hypotenuse.
Cosine function (cos), defined as the ratio of the adjacent leg to the hypotenuse.
Tangent function (tan), defined as the ratio of the opposite leg to the adjacent leg.

Please let me know if I need to study more. Please HELP…

@much77

I think you should study the:

Law of Sines
Law of Cosines
Trigonometric Identities (Including Double-angle and Half-angle)

They’re very useful for finding out things about triangles.

Also they are often helpful on AMC type questions, which are similar to the types of questions on the challenge math

Don’t be intimidated by them, they are very simple ideas/formulas.

Test in 24 days! I have tons of conferences to go to this month, thus tons of opportunities to study on long bus rides.

I’m a sophomore who goes to science school (read: meganerd), and I think I’ll do relatively OK on the science section, considering I’ve taken bio, physics, and chem. The thing is: I suck at math competitions. Like, absolutely, dreadfully suck. What’s the best way to prepare for the challenge math section? AMC Practice Tests? Do I do AMC 8? 10? 12? AAAH advice would be appreciated :3

Test dates and sites are out! (well, for me, at least) Is anyone with me? Room 428 Pupin Hall. It would be really cool to meet someone at Columbia that I know from CC :D

Room 702 Hamilton Hall :)

Does anyone know how important the transcript is to admissions? My transcript still hasn’t arrived at Columbia. Will they even look at me if it never gets there?

What room does everyone have? I’m in Room 516 in Hamilton Hall. So stressed about the test! I’m gonna be cramming so hard for it :)

I would get put into the Mathematics Hall 207…
I heard that Law of Sines and Cosines shows up often, forgotten them though
Trig formulas I have memorized
Probably should review some Bio stuff
Oh and Conic Sections, do these show up?

I’m in 312 Mathematics hall. Any advise on what else to study? I took chem last year and I plan on reviewing that. I’m currently taking Bio and I’ve been reviewing that for the AP and the SAT II. I went over the videos on Khan Academy concerning circuits and velocity, scalars, acceleration, force etc. Any tips for studying earth science or any sites you’d recommend? I heard there’s astronomy… I’ve already learned how to read a weather map as well.

Hey Guys Quick question what do you guys think is the best way to study for the challenge section I’m in trig now. Also i haven’t finished chemistry yet and haven’t taken physics yet what do you guys think would be the best approach for me to study? Thanks a lot my test is on next saturday

I suggest doing some practice problems from the AMC contests. You can find old tests and solutions and other practice material on the artofproblemsolving website.

I haven’t taken chem or physics yet so I’m studying regents and SAT II for them. I’m taking the test in April so I have more time to study :)

thanks I’ve been studying alot for math but do you guys have any recommandations on what to study for the science aspect I’ve been using [Oswego City School District Regents Exam Prep Center](http://regentsprep.org/regents.cfm) and i don’t know if it’s the best site

by the way they use the same test every year right?

I am in the Havermeyer Hall Room 306. I am pretty scared, does anyone have any last week prep tips?

Does anyone know whether the challenge math is open-ended or multiple choice? i am sooo worried. i hope everything works out :)

Multiple choice.

Tip: Go through this thread and look at the answers of any and all questions discussed. Can’t hurt you.

asked my friends dad who is involved in this program apparently they are entirely changing the test this year since someone told them about this thread. That being said the format and type of questions will be the same
