I answered 65/75 Science, 50/50 Math, and 16-17/20 Challenge ( Over 10 correct at least ) and I’m a sophomore. Do I have a chance?

@whatkneww-If I remember correctly, it said that out of 3000 applicants, maybe 300 got in? I’m not really sure, it’s hard to remember sorry!

And just to anyone - does 48-49/50 easy math (careless mistakes ALWAYS kill me), 60/75 science, and a 17/20 challenge math mean i have good chances of getting in?

Out of curiosity, Did you guys answer most questions even if you were only 50% sure or only the questions you were certain about?

If I could narrow the problem down to two answer choices, then I just guessed. I think I did this for maybe five of the science questions.

I’m a sophomore, and i think i got 73+ on science, cuz ive taken all the sciences, I got 48-50 on easy math, and 16+ on challenge math, out of 18 i answered. Can i get in? Because i do very well on tests but my grades on transcripts are low 90’s because i dont do much homework at school. The exam is what really counts right?

I’m not addressing anyone in specific, but a lot of people are saying that they got like 15+… but do you guys mean that you only answered 15 and got 15 correct or that you answered all 20 and prbbly got 15 correct..cuz out of the total score, I think a wrong answer on the challenge could be the most detrimental out of all of the questions. I only answered the questions that I could work out like I would not answer even if I narrowed it down to two choices because the proctor in my room as well as the proctor in my room last year both emphasized the option of omitting questions if you don’t know the answer. Also, my proctor this year said that they don’t know the penalty… so I didn’t take chances cuz who knows.. the penalty could be like 10 points for every question on the challenge section..

Well I answered 17/20

Don’t know how many are correct … Probably got a few wrong

I think they just don’t want people guessing randomly, in case there are people that are great are guessing, but aren’t that smart. And I don’t think the penalty would be more than 1 point.

16/19 here, but it wasn’t like I was guessing; I just made stupid mistakes like not carefully seeing the different units on the cube question ><

What different units? The answer was defninitely 6 man

@Indiankid96 - there were different units, i think cubic feet for the volume and square inches or something for the area. and II answered 18 on the challenge, i think i got 16-17 of them right.
and @SilverAurora - but the opposite problem could occur too - you have someone who has no clue about a question and leaves it blank and a person who can narrow it down pretty well but still leaves it blank. either way you’ve got a gray area where it’s hard to figure out what people really know.

and just to anyone, i’ve read through this entire thread and it seems that in past years, it was a 1/3 point penalty for wrong answers for the easy math and the science, and a 1/4 point penalty for wrong answers for the challenge math, but maybe they changed it.

alright then i guess my score is 15/18 on the challenge math

Where do people find the penalty values from, like are there any credible sources..?

Does anyone know the answer to the physics question on which series was composed of only series. which one was it? (I put the one with the circular pathway with three lightbulbs on the side of the circuit closest to the top of the page, not the one with the lightbulbs to the right of the potential difference generator, i.e. the battery)

Does anyone know what constellation Polaris is in?

There was another circuit question that I had trouble with. Does anyone remember it and can answer it?

seems like most of the people here did pretty well
i hope it’s because all the smart people are in this thread ;)

@maximum123

i dont remember what i put for the physics question, but i do know that polaris is in ursa minor. (which makes me upset cause i put orion since i saw it close to polaris the other night.. ): )
@flawless007
there are no credible sources for the penalty values since the proctors don’t even know themselves. the things people said here are assumptions. it’s hard to guess really. @_@;

@daphne, i sat near the front too. the right half of the room, the third row from the front.

I could answer 64/75 of the science questions correctly. I’ve never taken chem or physics. I could reason my way through some of the chem and physics questions, but some of them I just could not answer.
The easy math, I answered all but one confidently.
The challenge math, I could answer 9/20, but I’m not sure how many of those are correct.

@SilverAurora: Yeah. It’s the big dipper.

Anyone get the question on the challenge math that was like.
If A gave B and C the amount of money they already had, and B gave A and C all they had, and they all ended up with 16 cents, how much did A start out with?

And was the one with the two age groups 3:4? (still challenge math; it was the one with the doctors and lawyers)

@rollingduck

Yeah, I got that problem. A started out with 28 cents, B had 16, and C had 4.
Here’s how I did it. Lowercase letters stand for the initial amount each person had.
After the first exchange, A had a - b - c, B had 2b, and C had 2c.
After the second exchange, A had 2(a - b - c), B had 2b - (a - b - c) - 2c and C had 4c.
4c = 16, so c = 4
2(a - b - 4) = 16 which simplifies to a - b = 12
2b - (a - b - 4) - 2(4) = 16 which simplifies to 2b - a + b + 4 - 8 = 16 -> 3b - a = 20
Substituting, 3b - (12 + b) = 20 -> 2b = 32 -> b = 16 and a = 28

I forgot what the doctors and lawyers one was.

I think i got 74/75 on the science, 50/50 on the easy math, and 12/20 on the challenge section (I answered 12, i know i got all 12 that i answered correct). i know that the probability of getting in is slim because i missed so many on the challenge math part, but do you think i have a chance, or none at all? Im a sophmore btw.
