Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

The answer to the sci question with the land and sea with arrows was “The ground receives more sunlight than the ocean.” They both get the same amt of sunlight but the ground absorbs and emits it more rapidly because it has a low specific heat while water has a high specific heat. You couldve done process of elimination. (I took regents earth sci)

And the runner one was candy bar.

If I’m a junior and i dont get in now is there another time I could apply?

Looking back on the problems, I know I made quite a few mistakes today. But, do you ccers think a sophomore who scored 49/40 easy math, 60/75 science and 15/20 challenge will get in? Thanks.

@Unique, no
@Oftheking: I still doubt 300 people got better than that, but perhaps the strength of your application (incase of ties) would help too

If we get into this program, does the course we take count as college credit?

there was a question from physics on which series was composed of only series. which one was it? (I put the one with the circular pathway with three lightbulbs on the side of the circuit closest to the top of the page, not the one with the lightbulbs to the right of the potential difference generator, i.e. the battery)

Also, I was able to answer all science and math questions, and 17 or 18 questions on the hard math section. How did I do? (I know I got one wrong, the one where the bug travels in a circle, I got (4/5, 1/3))

Also, there was one question on the constellation the polaris is in, which one was it?

There was another circuit question I had trouble with but I forgot it.

no wait. I think I got (2/3, 1/3). I made an educated guess on that one, since it seemed to me that the bug was approaching a bit under 1 (in terms of x) and a bit under 1/2 (in terms of y)

I posted a solution to the bug one a page ago or so.

yeah I saw it I know i’m wrong about it lols

I think I got 70/75 for science and 50/50 for easy math, and then 10/20 challenge- is the challenge most important part? If so, I guess I won’t get in…

@maximum

series just means that the circuit doesn’t split into 2 or 3… that it just stays in one route. I forgot which answer it was though.

I had no idea what a potential difference generator was, so i skipped that question.

to locate polaris, i’m pretty sure you should find the big dipper first. not completely sure.

@above: I did pretty well in challenge math last year (like 12 or so out of 15?) but I didn’t get in, because I did pretty bad in science. (like high 50’s out of 75)

hmmm… what do you suppose was the “cutoff” for last year. Like, how much would we have probably had to get to get in?

Do we ever get to see our results on the shp test?

Do you guys know when we’ll get the letter? Is it like within two weeks or June?

sometime in june

it says june 20th on the website, but judging from previous years, the letter could come up to a week after june 20th

@azngeneration21c - i applied last year and was rejected, and they didn’t tell me my score or a certain cutoff or anything, just stats. on the top-scoring people who were accepted, if i remember correctly.

@auteurfille22
did it say how many people applied and how many got in?

i think i got 48+ in easy math, 65+ in science (i only dont know the ones for earth science cause i’ve never taken earth science before) and I answered only 16 questions in challenge math and i should have at least 12 correct.
but im a junior. anyone know if they have a curve for different graders? are my chances slim then?
