Columbia University Waitlist 2024 Discussion

Also got the extended waitlist and from DC. Not sure if I’m staying on yet.

Got extended waitlist and I’m from NJ.

Extended waitlist from NC

Extended waitlist from Michigan

Any idea if the extended waitlist actually gives you a good shot at getting in? The update seemed to indicate there wasn’t really a great chance of getting in. and with so many people on the list too, it seems unlikely…

Extended Waitlist from MA

Extended waitlist also from MA. idk if I’m staying on yet

extended waitlist from Texas

Extended waitlist from the Northeast here.

The most worrying line from Columbia is “we will update you on your status in early August” - boy do we have a good chunk of time to wait…

Previous posters have said that current Columbia admits can no longer defer to 2025, but I have my doubts. I’m currently Yale '24 and we will have the opportunity to take a gap year after Yale announces their fall plans (soon!) . Given that Columbia is a peer institution, I would think that they might offer their students a similar option.

So if Columbia announces online classes early July, a whole bunch of deferment activity would take place throughout the month, so that by early August the dust will have settled and the extended waitlist will finally be considered.

And if the Columbia '24 group chats are anything like Yale’s GroupMe, a lot of kids will defer if classes go online. Some even prefer a gap year to a heavily-restricted campus experience. Now humor me here as I play out this scenario a bit more: rumors indicate that Yale will encourage deferment if students are on-campus, to cut down class size and give everybody a single-bed dorm. If the same is true at Columbia, the waitlist might not be used so that class size remains manageable for a socially-distanced campus experience. But if classes are fully online, you can be sure that both schools will pull from their waitlists to make up for deferments and keep that sweet tuition money in their pockets.

This is just my two cents. I hope it helps, but it is heavily biased and coming from a very small point of view on these things.

Extended waitlist from CA

yea i think this “extended waitlist” was just a way for them to keep all domestic applicants interested and filter out international. did anyone intl get extended and any domestic get removed from wl?

Yes, we are in Florida and one of my sons was extended on the waitlist and one of them was removed from the waitlist.

If the portal shows still on waitlist, does that mean I was extended ? Or everyone has to get an email notification.

got extended waitlist email too, how many students are on this list? the school we have committed to starts the classes in early august too.

Just from this thread alone, there are roughly 20 kids who got the extended waitlist option. I’m sure there are a lot more extended waitlist ppl who just don’t use cc…

Here’s a theory that’s purely based on speculation- maybe the extended waitlist option went to 49% of the waitlist. So technically, Columbia rejected the majority recently, but there is still A LOTof candidates left. I imagine that they would wanna be safe than sorry if more kids defer this summer, like what @xsmiles24 said

Soooooo I’m guessing that the chances are still very very slim and that the extended waitlist is huge - maybe 100? 200?

Ps I could be completely wrong  this is just a speculation based on my opinions

My son received extended waitlist too

Got Extended Waitlist too from PA.

do you guys know when Columbia will release their fall plans?

@columbia20000024, I believe this is the most current information from Columbia: https://provost.columbia.edu/news/calendar-update

anyone know if columbia has another deadline for gap years? for instance, Cornell’s deadline for gap year requests on July 10, so ppl are expecting the final waitlist movement to happen then.
