how do you think the recent announcement from ICE regarding international students will affect waitlist movement?

Columbia just announced their fall plans: hybrid classes, though all can be taken remotely; freshman and sophomores on campus in the fall, but leave by thanksgiving, and then juniors and seniors on campus in the spring; anyone who needs to be on campus for special reasons will try to be accommodated; large lecture classes will all be online; professors can choose how they run their classes. How will this affect waitlist movement?
Anyone know if Columbia is giving it’s undergrad an option to defer after they announce their plans?
According to the FAQs page, Columbia is not allowing deferments anymore since the deadline for deferring has passed. If first years do not want to attend this fall, they have to give up their enrollment and reapply the next admissions cycle for the 2021-2022 school year.
Ughhh… looks like little to no chance of spots opening up…
There will most likely be at least a few people who decide to cancel and reapply next year. Also, Columbia may do something similar to Dartmouth, who gave students a 10 day period to defer a few days after their fall plans were announced. Lastly, there is a very strong possibility that many internationals still will not be able to come, as well as the fact that some kids from Columbia might get off the waitlist from other schools and go there instead.
Perhaps Columbia will get a better sense of who is actually enrolling this fall after the housing agreement deadline (July 13).
According to the website, the new Columbia Housing form must be completed by July 13. Freshman will move in early September and “move out before Thanksgiving.” They have not released housing prices yet — I can’t imagine charging the “regular” semester dorm rate for 10 weeks of on-campus residency.
"Columbia Housing will open with reduced occupancy for Academic Year 2020-21. New students and sophomores are invited to live on campus in the fall semester. Juniors and seniors are scheduled for the spring semester. A small number of exceptions may be made by the schools for students with unique circumstances who seek to remain on campus all academic year.
Students who wish to live on campus, including those requesting an exception, must complete a 2020-21 Housing Form by Monday, July 13 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Students will be notified of approval directly by their school by end of day on Friday, July 17."
My daughter who chose to defer by the May 15 date told me that several kids showed up in her FB group and reported that they asked recently to defer and were told a hard No. If you did not defer by the May 15 date and chose not to attend this fall due to the recently released Covid-19 plan, you must reapply if you want to attend for 2021.
@singoutlouise thank you for your input !
Since 2024 can’t defer anymore, the only way a spot will open is if a Columbia student decides to go to hyps or another school by getting off a waitlist…
Tbh, I’m taking this as a soft rejection
Any news?
Nope. Still waiting like a good little Columbia applicant. They are really making us beg for it, and I will without shame.
I think it’s pretty much over since the class is filled. No more waves!
Why do you guys think they said they’ll tell us by early August?
Prob that all the spots are taken
how do you guys think ICE’s new announcement will affect the waitlist?
I think Columbia is the only ivy with a WL now
@staylor1490 i;m still on the cornell one
Harvard’s waitlist is also still open. At this point, I think it’s just Columbia and Harvard left.
Any word?
Harvard closed their waitlist today, I don’t think it’s looking too good
