I know that Barnard College and Teacher’s College are “affiliated” with Columbia University, but I am a bit confused as to what exactly that means. What exactly is the difference between say Barnard’s relationship with the university and the School of Engineering and Applied Science’s relationship with the university? or the difference between the Teacher’s College’s relationship with Columbia University and the School of Journalism’s relationship with Columbia University? Thanks for the help.

They’re institutions that are independent from Columbia University. They have their own budgets/endowments, their own central administration (president, provost, etc.), their own trustees, their own land/property (I think!), etc.

“Affiliated” means that these institutions have relationships with Columbia University. These relationships entail such things as common graduation, cross-registration, etc.

CC, SEAS and GS are the three undergraduate colleges of Columbia Unversity. CC’s relationship w/ Columbia University is the same as SEAS’s relationship w/ Columbia University. Barnard is an independent institution that is affiliated with Columbia University.

The J-School, the med school, the law school, the b-school, etc. are all graduate schools of Columbia University. Teacher’s College is an independent institution that is affiliated with Columbia University.
