What are the pros and cons of both? In terms of academics, opportunities, student culture, quality of life, etc.
Both are very similar in top notch academic and intellectual rigor. Both have core requirements. Columbia’s core has prescribed courses. UChicago offers more choice. UChicago is a real campus and has a great campus life. Columbia is all about NY. Chicago is a great city that offers almost all that NY does, but is dramatically less expensive. This is a huge consideration both during and after college/graduate school. Columbia attracts more high flying wealthy international students. UChicago still has a bit of a mid-western lower key vibe. UChicago is stronger than Columbia in economics, natural sciences, math, English and History. Columbia is stronger in life sciences, international affairs, most regional studies and engineering (Uchicago has none). Also of note: Uchicago business and law schools are in front of Columbia. Columbia med school is in front of UChicago. Bottom line: go where you want to live the next 4 years. These are both fabulous elite cream of the cream schools. You cannot go wrong.
